  1. I've got quote a few MPEG1 files that won't play properly in Quicktime. Even though they're 15-20 minutes long, only the first 2 minutes or so shows up in Quicktime. They play fine in VLC.

I've been experimenting with different ways to get the whole time to show up in Quicktime, and one thing I tried was DeMUXing the files. I've had good success with bbDEMUX.

On a side note, a weird thing happens if I use ffmpegX or mpgtx. The demuxed video stream will be around 16 gigs, even though the original MPEG1 is only about 200 megs or so. bbDEMUX doesn't do this, so that's what I've been using.

Anyway, my question: I've tried muxing these streams with ffmpegX and mpgtx, and I'm getting poor results. The files that are produced often lock up, and the audio is not synced. Is there a better tool for muxing MPEG1 streams?

crap in crap out. Your mpeg files are most likely corrupted.
    Let me guess.... internet download?
if demuxing these causes anomolies thats 1st indication that they are messed up.

VLC may be forgiving, but quicktime may not....

  3. that's what I figured. I have discovered a round about way to get them synced again: demux with bbDEMUX, import into Toast 6, export as DV, then encode them in QTPro.
