  1. Hi,
I got one .avi-movie and the subtitles as a .sub-file, and
I want to have these on a DVD.
Now, converting from .avi->dvd is no problem, but how do I
add the subs ? I want either have the subs "in the stream" or as a separate subtitle on the DVD (You know what I mean, an ordinary sub).
    Summary:
    My problem is
    1. merging a .sub with a .avi or .mpeg
    OR
    2. authoring a dvd and add some subtitles.

I want to know the easiest (fastest, least trouble) way to do this, and what tools to use.
Many thanks in advance, you're great!

I found this by searching "add subs" right on this site: https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=178274&highlight=add+subtitles

That may help. Most times, searches will provide an answer. You can have a look at other threads in the same way.
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

  3. Ok.. this is how you do it. First convert your sub file to ssa or vobsub (check the tools section) Virtualdub only accept these 2 types. It can also probable accepts others but you must add them in yourself. I,m not so sure.

Next load virtualdub.. load your avi.. select filter.. add..choose avery for ssa or vobsub for vobsub. A dialog will appear.. select your subfile.. load it

Play the avi with the second button..the sub should appear.Check for syncronisation.. if not adjust accordingly with the sub filter using the time offset box

Next frameserve to TMPG (how to.. see guide in this forum) Proceed as normal. It's not difficult. Good Luck

    PS Pardon my BAD English

  4. There are two ways to have subs on a DVD. Permanant subtitles (the subs are part of the encoded MPEG file). Selectable subtitles (the subtitles can be turned on/off).

That method above will generate a MPEG with permenant subtitles (which may or may not be acceptable to you). If you look at the guides for encoding a VCD/SVCD with subtitles they'll tell you how to make a MPEG with permenant subs frameserving with either VDub or avisynth.

To make a DVD with selectable subtitles is a little more involved. First, you need a program that can author using a subtitle stream. The only programs that I know that can do this are: DVD Maestro, Scenarist, Reel DVD, Adobe Encore, and IFOEdit. Cost wise most people use IFOEdit (freeware).

IFOEdit only accepts subtitles in the *.SUP format you can find tools/guides to convert from one sub format to the other at doom9.org:

    http://www.doom9.org/subtitle_guides.htm

Basically you encode the video as normal, the audio as normal, and then generate a *.SUP subtitle file. Author the DVD with IFOEdit. If you want to edit the DVD further you can open the VOB files with DVD Lab or TMPG DVD Author (or another program that will open VOB files).
