  1. Hi,

    I tried to compress a ripped VIDEO_TS folder to fit a DVD-R.
No matter which size I entered in DTOX (always used 4444MB before, but also tried 4200MB) the output file always is as big as 4,55GB and won´t fit onto a DVD-R. I ripped the DVD using DVDBackup and the second time using OSex. Does anyone know what´s going wrong??

    wow, never had this happen
Test it once by putting it WAY down say to 2 gigs for movie only. If it doesnt work still, id suggest redownloading the app or updating if you have not already

sometimes you will get it be a few sectors over, but generally it will fit with 4444

OR its your media and its some strange media that isnt even close th 4 gigs for dvdr (which would be wierd)

  3. I´m using the most recent versions of the applications. Ripped and dtoxed another DVD and burned it with Toast succesfully. Even tried to choose smaller sizes in DTOX but the outpout "VIDEO_TS" folder is always at 4.55GB. Maybe it´s a kind of a new protection placing some dummy file in the generated directory. I also switched the hidden files on but haven´t found any supect file.

Any hints on this problem ???

so if you tell it to do movie only at 2 gigs you get 4.5 gigs?
if so then it must be some strange movie.

Perhaps try some other forms of backing it up before running dvd2one, im sorry, i have never had this happen personally.

I've had it happen on certain DVDs that had a crapload of extras. For awhile, I'd make dummy VOB files to replace the extras I cared nothing about ... Remarkably though, the lastest DVD2OneX release solved that problem.

My suggestion would be to delete DVD2OneX, including the plist file in /home/library/preferences ... go to the download site to ensure you're using the newest version, and reinstall.

My guess is that you've run into the limit of how much you can requantize a m2v stream before having to reencode it. You can only remove so many padding streams and b frames (or whatever - can you tell I'm not an MPEG2 expert) before you have nothing but the bare MPEG 2 video, and can't remove anymore. Your only solution might be to reencode the m2v stream at a lower bitrate, which will take a little longer, but give better results. Try giving DVDRemaster (in reencoding mode) or Forty-Two a shot.

Or maybe you can just DTOX this one in movie-only mode, as it might fit, and it would be a lot easier than dealing w/ forty-two and Sizzle et al. DVDRemaster might also work, but that only does movie-only too. Your best bet might be DTOX movie-only, and as a last resort, 42, DVDRem., or even Discomvobulator. Good luck with that.

That´s the same idea I had. Deleted the plist file and the application itself.
Downloaded the most recent version and tried to start it but now DTOX won´t start anymore. The DTOX Icon in the dock is only bumping once when I´m trying to start the application and that´s all. What have I done wrong?
Why can´t I start DTOX anymore. Also repaired permissions and checked the drive for errors but no change?

    Plz help

  10. Perhaps the dock icon is from the previous version. If so drag it out of the dock (smiling at the puff of smoke animation) and drag the new application to the dock. IF you can't launch the app by double clicking on it directly, something went wrong in either the download or the installation.

No it´s a new icon and I also tried to doubleclick the application.
    Any other suggestions

... and if that doesnt work, your only last resort is to reinstall OS X ... Now, before you panic, don't go and overwrite your current install just yet. If you have an external drive (even an iPod will do), install a fresh copy of OS X on the iPod/external drive, start up from that volume, install DVD2OneX on it, and try a quick test. If it works, you'll know what you need to do.

  14. Found the problem that DTOX won´t start anymore. It´s due to the fault of Stuffit 8.0. Stuffit always set wrong permission bits when you´re expanding an archive. A simple chmod a+x to the main app in the DTOX.app resolved the problem.

    Thanks again for you help

Wow, good job troubleshooting that one. I'll have to keep an eye on that. I haven't upgraded to 8.0 yet, and maybe I'll just wait for 8.0.1 . . . So, now that it works, does the latest version fix the issue, or are you still limited to that same final output size? Were you doing full disk copy or movie only in DTOX?

you know... i wonder if this trend is a result of stuffit 8.0 users. I have not updated past 7.x and have no problems

I can think of several people who had this problem....

  17. That issue doesn´t fix the outpout size. I´ve read to dtox the new dtox outpout a second time to get the desired size. I´ll give it a try this evening.
Yesterday I tried to dtox it with constant bitrate which gave me the desired size but also a horrible picture quality

How about movie-only mode? What's the runtime of the movie you're trying to copy, BTW?

There has been a lot of discussion on the macintouch.com and macfixit.com web sites about Stuffit 8 and permissions issues. Apparently if you have a file compressed in the .sitx format the permissions will probably be set correctly, but anything that's the more compatible .sit compression will get screwed up.
