  1. I have a divx file that I would like to burn to an SVCD. I am simply getting Nero to do the conversion, I know it's not the best but it serves my purposes. anyway, I burnt the SVCD but the picture is full screen, not widescreen, and upside down!!!!! How can I fix this problem? I've been trying for a year to get SVCD/VCD's to work and when I fianlly do, it's upside down! Help!

    Obviously not!
Some codec is flipping your picture, and I don't think Nero allows you to set DAR (4:3 / 16:9).
If you'd use the right tools for the right step in the process from AVI file to SVCD, you'd have noticed these problems long before after hitting Play on the DVD.

Take your pick among the AVI to SVCD guides here, where Nero is not used for anything besides burning the SVCD image.

  3. Ok, I've taken your advice and used another program (TMPGEnc) to convert the file to both VCD (mpeg1) and SVCD (mpeg2) format. Now there is a new problem:

The audio when I play back the VCD/SVCD in my DVD player has a rythmic snap to it, which also causes a very slight jerk in the video. It's actually very distracting when watching the movie, so is there a way I can fix this? I've tried exporting the audio with VirtualDub to no avail, it still does it, and I am using a CDRW that I know works with my machine. suggestions please? thanks!

This sounds (no pun intended) like a frame rate conversion fenomenon. The frame rate of the AVI is not the same as the one selected for the mpg?
If so, get ready for a new chapter to read: The Dreaded Frame Rate Conversion!

  5. Actually, what happened was I was encoding on the CBR setting. When I tried 2 pass VBR I can now get both VCD and SVCD to play fine on my DVD player. Maybe it's really sensitive to bitrate? anyway, thanks for all the help, hopefully I've got it now.

VBR "VCD" works better than CBR VCD? There's even no such thing as a VCR VCD, since VCD has 1150 CBR in its specs! Well, so much for standards...
