  1. Hi ppl, I have looked on the forum for a solution to my problem but seem to have gotten more confused. I converted the following avi file with TMPGenc, in the hope of making an SVCD (PAL) to play on my Stand Alone Player...

    File : 708 MB (708 MB), duration: 1:35:09, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 62 %
    Video : 621 MB, 912 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 720x304 (2.21:1), DIV3 = DivX v3 MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), Supported
    Audio : 87 MB, 128 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 3 (MP3), Supported

...I then Burnt the 1st half to disc and when i played it, the audio waz fine but the video waz quite choppy so i am hoping some one can point out ne poss reasons why this might have happened and how i could sort it out.

    Thx in advance.

Use this principle..."if you put s*** in..you get s*** out". If your source was crappy to begin with, then you're not going to have much luck with quality.

Sometimes you get "choppy" looking video if you've (accidentally) swapped the original field order.
You gave lots of info, which is great. :c) But do you know if it was frame-based or field-based? Maybe that's the hitch. :c)
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1
The Rogue Pixel: Pixels are like elephants. Every once in a while one of them will go nuts.

  4. I've noticed alot of the choppy issues relate to running (or lack thereof) a pulldown on the video.

You may need to set the pulldown flag in TMPGenc...though for SVCD I am uncertain.

Do a general forum search withe the word 'jerky' or 'choppy'.

This guy deals with it in his guide https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/131154.php under Inverse Telecine - also named 3:2 Pulldown

  7. Thx alot folks for your replies, i tried them but sadly they havent sorted my probs out (though i am very greatful all the same). The thing i seem to have noticed (prob quite obvious to most) is that when converting from PAL .avi > PAL .mpg(SVCD) i do not have any probs. Its only when converting from NTSC .avi > PAL .mpg that the prob with chop arrises. i also noticed that when i converted from 23.976 > 25. the chop waz less noticable than from 29.970 > 25. (this is, im assuming, coz the framerates where closer)...but ...well..erm chop is chop and i desperately want to get rid of it. I did read this guide... https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/78178.php ...but found it a bit vague, eg. it says to select "video only" but there are 2 "video only" settings in TMPGenc - ES(Video only) & System(Video only)....so i didnt get very far. Here is another avi file which turned out choppy (though not as much as the previous one in this topic):

    File : 701 MB (701 MB), duration: 1:27:59, type: AVI, 1 audio stream(s), quality: 43 %
    Video : 620 MB, 986 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 512x384 (4:3), DIV3 = DivX v3 - MPEG-4 (Low-Motion), Supported
    Audio : 80 MB, 127 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = MPEG Layer-3, Supported

If i understand things rightly then what i need to do is...
    a) seperate the video from the audio
    b) convert the video from 23.976/29.970 > 25.
    c) stretch & pitchshift the audio.wav (previously extracted) to match the converted video -with cool edit 2000 (which, as i aint got this far, havent used yet)
    d) hopefully put them back together

Hope i have covered as much as is needed....Plz,Plz, could u help me
    Thx in advance

  8. Not sure if you went through these guides yet....but here are some NTSC/PAL coversion guides

    https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?howtoselect=4;41

For 23.976 Fps you dont have to do a frame rate conversion....you just put pulldown flag in it and an NTSC dvd players will automatically do the conversion. I am not sure if PAL dvd players are the same though....maybe one those guides up above will explain it.
