  1. My problem is that my dvd,s often became unreadable in the outer sectors so i never can make a copy of a copy. Now i bought a cheap dvd-rom only to have when i read dvd,s.But my problem hasn´t gone. The new dvd-rom reads better but it fails at last anyway.I use 4xprinco media.
Please , do you have any clue whats wrong , i have flashed my nec1300a severel times with different firmwares with no luck .about 35-45% of the discs cant be read!!!
I use a nec 1300a ,dvd decrypter and nero or recordnow max to burn, but nothing works.I burn in 4x speed.
    I have a P2 500 Mhz

Try using Ritek disks instead of Princo disks. I used Princos for a while and had lots of problems with them. Now I've switched to Ritek and no more coasters.

  3. My guess is bad media at the outter edge. I have seen this in both Verbatim and Apple media and they are the better quality DVDR media. So try another brand of media or simply don't record files over 4GB.

    Any number of reasons:
    1. Slow computer.
    2. Messing with firmwares.
    3. Cheap media.
    4. Cheap DVD-ROM.

Absolutely. I remember my old 486 choked on CD-R because of underruns.

The P4 had already been out for close to a year before DVD-R came out, which was a year before DVD+R.

Your HD speed has a lot to do with it too, as does the BUS speed and DMA mode.

  7. Yep all the above.
And if you read the various posts about media's and burning, you'll see a ton about errors near outer edges. Myself I normally try to burn only 4 gigs to a disk! I use cheap leda/princos 1x disks and never have a problem.

Also if you been playing the disks, check carfully for ANY damge at the outer edges. I burned a disk and took it to a friends house. The first time it played his player wore the edges of the disk and ruined it! It would not even load at all in my player when I got home.
Just dull buffed/wore spots on the outer areas.

This thread is ridiculous, as are all the others that say "Keep your movie under 4 gigs so you don't have to burn the last 300 megs, the disks won't play.".

If the damn things won't go to full capacity, MxMxM, something is rotten in Denmark. 4.7 is really 4.3, but try to keep it under 4.0, because we have a problem with the outer edge write.

The disk won't burn and play at full capacity, they should be replaced as defective media.

If there is a burning program which will burn to capacity, get that program, but it seem s that NO program will burn fully so that is is playable.

Trash is trash, and if it is trash, have it replaced.

This is worse than a HDD advertised at 160 gig formatting at 152 gig. At least I know I have 152 gig and can delete or whatever. You make a 4.1 movie, it says OK, you burn, it's trash, another coaster, and just how many coasters do you need, unless you have a lot of company?

    So true.

I have Princo for content that is naturally under 4GB to start with (though most Princo 4x are fine these days all the way to the edge). If I have 2GB of files to backup, I'm not going to make up 2.38 more just to fill up the disc. Or if the movie is only 30 minutes, and I can use the max spec of 10.08 with room to spare.

But if you want to make a movie or multi-episode DVD from scratch, only having access to partial capacity is for the birds. Personally, I try to use all 4.3 when I make a DVD-Video.

  10. Wow....alot of different thoughts on this.....I do have to agree with the fact the computer is a little old to try to burn a DVD. You really should invest in a new mobo/processor. AMD is getting cheaper by the day. Check out Pricewatch.com, you may find a decent bargain. AS far as the media is concerned, I also had a problem at first with cheap media. Stick to the mid-priced stuff and you should have no problems.....As far as flashing the drive, thats a no no...do that ONLY if you are having a serious issue, otherwise you make make your drive into a $200 paperweight....
Ever get that feeling you are being watched??

  11. I think with 35-40% reject (coaster) rate I'd try something else. Like 1x - burn-proof and small files to start with, then work my way up.

I don't really know if that 500Mhz is up to burning at 4X or not. If you do your addition that is.

What is your CPU load on that thing at 4X burn?
