I have two quick questions.
1) Would it be better to convert my AVI's into SVCD or VCD to watch in a standalone DVD player? From what I understand SVCD is better. Or should I convert to something else?
2) What's the best guide on here to show me how to do this? Because there are so many guides on here that use different programs, that I don't know which to use.
Thanks!![]()

Start with the What Is Info on the very top left of this page. Look at VCD & SVCD. There will be links within that info to take you further, once you decide which way you want to go.
Only you will know which you prefer - more video per disc vs. higher quality, compatibilty with players, etc. There's no place like 127.0.0.1

i would think it would depend on the quality of the avi to begin with, it wouldnt be worth turning thne avi into a svcd, if its low quality to begin with

Ok i was reading a little more on VCD's and SVCD's and I still can't decide, I understand it has to do with more video per disc vs. higher quality. Is the quality of SVCD that much better than VCD to sacrifice an additional disc or two?
How would I know if the quality of the AVI is worth converting into SVCD or not? Is there some type of chart I can follow?
By the way my DVD player plays both.
Thanks again!
p.s. I still have no idea which guide to follow from this website to do the conversion. Any recommendations? -
No, no chart. :c) It's all subjective, personal preference and depends on how good the source is, how important it is to - and lots of "etc"s.
Why not try a version in each and see which you prefer? You'd learn both ways in one go.
There are very good guides right here for each. Take them step-by step.

Ok, I'm going to start with VCD but i got 14 hits on how to convert from AVI to VCD. Is there any preferred guide/tutorial of these 14? I'm sure some are better than others. I wish I can try them all, unfortunately I don't have the time.
And about the "chart" on whether or not one should decide if it's worth converting to SVCD instead of VCD from AVI. I think I saw a post on here in which someone gave rough estimates on different resolutions of AVI's and whether they are worth converting to SVCD instead of VCD. But I can't find it again. Anyone know where I can find it?
Thanks! -
Did you look at the link I gave you? :c( Looked it up for you and everything. :c*
Here - I'll even do the further links for you: https://www.videohelp.com/divxtovcd.htm

Yes I looked at the links you provided, and thank you very much for looking them up for me. I really appreciate it. The question that I was asking was there are so many guides/tutorials that show how to do the AVI to VCD conversion, that I don't know which to choose from. They all use different programs and some seem to take longer than others. I'm sure some guides are better than others. So which one should I start with?
I noticed in that last link that you provided me with is a DIVX to VCD conversion, is Divx another form of AVI?
Thank you! -
Divx is just one of many codecs within the avi format.

https://www.videohelp.com/sefy/?id=divx2vcd.html is this guide ok to use? the one you provided seems to be for backing up DVD's not converting AVI to (S)VCD.
Thanks![/url] -
Yes, many people could tell the difference at a glance. BUT it will greatly depend on your source video as to what is the sensible choice. Others have stated this above. I did - in my second reply. Ricky seconded it.
Zippy agreed.
Only you are in possession of it so only you can tell. Is it extremely high quality - then go with SVCD if you want to maintain that quality as best you can.
Many sources - such as downloads that some people have are, frankly, such poor quality, that they are wasted on SVCD and the use of more than one disc. IE: choosing SVCD will not improve the quality, only maintain it to a higher degree if it is, indeed, already high quality.
I hope that makes it clear and your decision easier.
The guide you reference is written by a Moderator of this very site. So, yes, I think you should feel very confident in using it. :c)
Sometimes you've got to jump right in there and go for it! Make a decision and run with it. Not worry so much. :c)
If you don't like the VCD you'll have lost a Sunday and wasted one CD. But you'll have learned a lot for the next try.
Good luck. There's no place like 127.0.0.1
