I captured a home video a while ago but it looks like the header of the AVI file was messed up. I no longer have the source tape so I cannot capture the video again.

The video clip was encoded using DivX 5.0 and the audio was MP3.

At this point no application is able to identify the codec of the clip, thus it cannot be opened edited or played. I tried to use DivFix but it failed because it was not able to identify the AVI file as valid. Virtual dub and some other applications also failed.

Is it possible to re-write the header of an AVI file so the video codec is recognized as DIVX?

I think I found the solution. Someone recommended using AVIFIX. I'm going to try it tonight

Just in case someone needs it, here is the link: http://www.divx-digest.com/software/avifix.html

Bad news for me. AVI Fixed 2.0b1 was not able to fix my video clip.

The error is File Format: Unknown.

Again, If anyone knows what can I do to rewrite the AVI header any tip woill be apreciated.

    Thanks, Otto

  4. Are you sure it's a corrupt header?
Is it possible that you don't have the correct codec installed?
Have you tried running avicodec and/or gspot to identify the codec?
