I am having a lot of PC trouble lately. My HDD crashed and was unrecoverable, so I bought a new one, installed it, jumpered it and adjusted the bios, then I got a windows boot disk with cd-rom support which gets me to my cd drives to install a new OS. Before I did that, I used Fdisk to create a primary DOS FAT32 partition on the new HDD, then I formatted it.

I then went and installed WinME on the PC and during the install process it reboots the computer. Trouble is, it wont boot from c:\ and will only boot from a floppy and when it does, the computer wont resume the install process and the drive parition format comes up as unknown.

Any help or ideas what to try would be helpful. I need to get this machine to boot off the root directory properly.
    thx.

  2. It sounds like you did not set the active partition in Fdisk. Did you?

Actually, I did set the partition as active.

I have been researching this problem on the net a bit and other users are having similar system hang ups at the "Verifying DMI Pool" prompt. This is my problem too.

  4. Well dang, I thought this would be an easy problem.

Are you using an ATA100 contoller with a hard drive larger than 137GB?

That should not cause a fatal error though. You should just not be able to use the whole drive. But I am shooting in the dark for causes right now.

  6. boot your pc but go into the bios setup for your motherboard, then reset all the stuff to defaults. Then reboot again to the BIOS and set it boot from floppy first then cdrom then HD. then boot from your system boot floppy (you do have one dont you?) or from your bootable OS cdr (you do have one of these dont you?).
WAIT ! the first time you add something new it can sit at the dmi blah prompt for quite some time.
    What motherboard do you have?
You cant use a "recovery" CDrom from another PC on a different make to do a full OS install. PARTition magic is very good for this sort of stuff.
