Best bet is to not start in forums, start with the guides and tools. After you've read up on stuff, it'll be easier to get an idea of exact questions to ask. :c)

Forums will make your head spin if you start there. :cD

  3. Look at the guides on the left unde convert. After your video is converted to the proper format check out the guides under author.

It takes a while. Don't let it get to you. I always suggest a cosy chair and a drink of your choice. :c)

I wish I had that advice when I got into this....
First of all, ask yourself, what do I want?? Then find out from the guides on the left hand side, what you need...

There seems to be a few major realms here. They all blend into each other somehow, but for the most part, are concentrated specifically for

    1) DVD's (which falls into the realm of ripping, backing up, authouring)

2)Video Applications (tends to fall in the categories of editing, encoding, frameserving, capturing, and authouring)..

This is a generality, but if you can split the two realms, learn the phrases, and understand the basics, then it'll come to you pretty fast...

    Good luck!!!!!!

  7. ok , back to the beginning .
    File from e-mule says AVI
In properties it says MPEG layer 3 ( fantastic quality )
In TMPGenc it will take 3 hours aprox ( is this normal ) to convert AVI -MPEG
If as properties states it is an MPEG can I then put it onto DVD via Easy DVD 6 ( Roxio ) ?
or is there something to do in between HELP........................................

    learn the phrases
    Oh, excellent point.

There's a good glossary here as well: https://www.videohelp.com/glossary

Helped me a lot in the early stages.

Can't say if that's normal since you did not say how long the video is.

Avi is avi. That mpeg3 is the audio. It must be converted. Yes, more steps to do. Back to your required reading.

  10. You probably have either an MPEG-4 file, or a file with MPEG Layer-3 Audio. It's probably not DVD compatible unless its about 4 GB in total. You will have to convert in to MPEG-2 in TMPGEnc, which, as you say, will take about 3 hours.

That's the only way, I'm afraid.

    :P

  11. many thanks ta2 and gees , yes it is Mpeg layer 3 , will now go and convert to Mpeg 2 in TMPGEnc . A few words from you guys gives me the confidence to get on with it , no doubt I will be back at a later stage of this AVI - MPEG - DVD saga , I just thought you could press a button and hey presto a DVD , how wrong I was , still not sure where the Easy DVD creator part comes in though ??.

I don't use Easy DVD Creator, but yes, I disagree with all the packages that say "Make your own DVDs at Home!"

They do not tell you that it takes ages to learn, you need extra stuff to do it, etc. etc.

Just stick with it. Everyone here started off same as you.

And, yes, pop back when you run into trouble, but best way is try each step on your own first, as you're doing. :c)

Good luck and remember to have fun. :c)

    Oh, and -- you're welcome.

    Simply put,

    Avi to DVD:

    1. encode to mpeg-2
    2. author with DVD authoring program
    3. burn with program of your choice

I know it is a lot harder than that but I have sucessfully done it many times so if you have any questions, Ask, I will gladly answer.

We were all newbies once, so I know the feeling. When I first joined this site, I did not know anything about video or even computers. But learning from my friends here I can do alot and I am still learning to this day. So visit often, many of us are here pretty much every day, its a second home to us.
