Well, in a legal twist, the court case happy RIAA is being sued by the makers of Kazaa. They claim that the actions taken by the RIAA violated the terms of service associated with using Kazaa and also with using Kazaa Lite (a hacked, and illegal, version of Kazaa for those who do not know).

"Sen. Sam Brownback , R-Kan., planned to introduce a bill Tuesday to protect Internet providers from such subpoenas. His proposal, which he called the 'Digital Consumer Internet Privacy Protection Act,' would block subpoenas except in pending civil lawsuits or in cases where pirated data files were stored on computers such as Web sites. That is soooooo cool.
Also, why the heck do the ISPs take all this crap from the RIAA. It must be costing them a fortune to go search for names as well as piss of their customers.

IIRC the DMCA requires the ISPs to give the info if you can prove a crime as occured. The question is what's the level need to prove a crime? The RIAA has screwed up in at least 3 cases (eg. the grandmother with the mac) that I know of, so it's got to be pretty low.

A crime !! Uhg.
I think that law was put into place to catch child molesters and terrorists.
I just think of how much the RIAA has ripped off artists for so many years to absorb the millions upon millions in legal bills, buying political influence and all of the PR crap.
