  1. Heya,

im new to authoring and just got my 1st DVD-writer last week. Now the family wants some VHS homevideos copied to DVDs to watch in their DVD-player instead, so i began capturing (damn it takes amounts of hd space) and have tried converting to DVD Mpeg2 with TMPGenc - which i think went alright.

Now I was gonna make the DVD with a small menu. For that I use Ulead DVD Workshop, but i seem to get a problem before finalizing the procedure.

Ive made the menu and added the MPEG clips - now when i click on "Make Disc" and choosing a Quality setting...i get the follow alertbox error:

"The instruction at "0x0ebe4f14" referenced memory at "0x001364c2". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program"

    ...after which DVD Workshop shutsdown.

Can anyone tell me what could be the problem?

And also, is there other easy DVD Authoring programs outthere I could try?

(All i need is the ability to customize the menu with background, music and buttons/text connecting the videoclips)

I expect that around 2-3 hours of VHS homevideos would fit on a 4.3gb DVD-R....is that reasonable or?

    Thanks in advance

The error message is telling you what the problem is, it can't read data from memory. This isn't a problem that is being caused by DVD Workshop, just one that DVD Workshop is finding. It could be a dodgy stick of memory, a memory sharing/addressing problem, memory timing, all sorts of things.

I'm afraid I don't know much about setup on Pentium processors/motherboards (I'm an Athlon man), but I have seen all sorts of weird memory problems with generic ram being run at 166MHz with a 266MHz bus speed processor. Although the ram was DDR 2700 so should have been up to it, dropping the ram bus speed to 133MHz cured all the problems with only a barely noticeable loss of performance (and even then, only when running a benchmark program, in actual use there didn't appear to be any difference). This was all done in bios.

    Maybe you have something similar???

This problem is caused by software "errors" more often then hardware problems. (I write software for a living, so I've seen this once or twice. ) It's probably not an outright bug -- although, it could be. I'd recommend de-installing and re-installing Workshop.

  4. Ok thanks, i'll try re-installing the program

I doubt its the RAM, as all other software works perfectly and this is the first time i've ever seen this type of error message.

  5. Nope, it came with the exact same error

And it cant be cause my videoclips are encoded wrongly - i just tried capturing a bit from Workshops internal capturefeature and tried using only this one clip in the menu. Same error.

Can anyone recommend another good authoring program?

I have made millions of DVDs with MovieFactory2.
It has a 30 day trial, but you may be afraid of Ulead.
    DVDLab has a trial
TMPGenc DVD Author has a trial.

I have made DVDs with all of them , no big problems

OK - this could be WAY off the mark, I hesitated a long time to even write this but.............

When I first got Workshop I used to crash with an error that I can't remember and it turned out to be that I did not put the DVD disc in the burner bEFORE I even went to to the Make Disc page.

I thought I could look there at options, but it was immediately triggering something as though I was ready to burn - when I wasn't.

Sounds ridiculous, but I offer it just in case. :c*

  8. There has been a DVD-RW in the drive all along - but thanks anyway

I might try MovieFactory 2, altho i dont think one can customize the menu very much there.

    That's not normal program behavior.

I doubt it has anything to do with your clips.

Moreover, such behavior suggests a flawed installation or a system-related conflict.

I would suggest that you download the FREE Memtest86 program and check your computer's memory - just to be on the safe side:

    http://www.memtest86.com/

If you know them, what are...

    1. the precise properties of your clips?

    and

    2. the precise project setting chosen in Ulead DVD Workshop during the MAKE DISC stage?

    Example:

I often work with clip properties such as these:

    NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
    MPEG files
    24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
    Field Order A
    (DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8264 kbps)
    LPCM Audio, 48 KHz, Stereo

    How do your clips compare?

Also - have you downloaded and applied the latest update for Ulead DVD Workshop?

    The update is located here...

    Hope this helps,
