  1. I have a movie encoded in Divx 5 that I want to convert to MPEG1 for burning to VCD.
The frame size is 640x346 at 23.976fps.

When I converted it using TMPENC, the outputed Mpeg1 file had the image pushed in from the side making it look quite weird at 352x240.

How can I encode this file while keeping a relatively close frame size ratio with the original Divx5 file, but still being able to burn it into a VCD.

    Two things you can do:

    1. Crop the sides of the video so that the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 is changed to the one used by VCD.

    2. Letterbox the video, so that black bars on top and bottom compensate for the change in aspect ratio.

For DVD or SVCD it would be an easy choice to letterbox. But for VCD, with only 240 horizontal lines, removing extra scan lines (making them black bars) would probably reduce the video height too much to carry any detail. So perhaps it would be better to crop the sides.

What I would do is take 5 minutes worth of movie and do both. Record that to a rewritable and check for yourself.

With Tmpgenc, go to Settings, Advanced and select to either Center the frame (keep aspect Ratio) or full screen (Keep aspect Ratio). This should crop off the edges.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

The full screen keep aspect ratio method is really good for this
    thanks!
