  1. I've been compiling a DVD showreel which plays fine in my home DVD machine, but Black & White in my mate's (both domestic all-region players). Here's what I've been doing...

The source files are MUSIC VIDEOS of 3 types:
    (1) Chapters extracted from Promo Only compilations (ie originally .VOB)
    (2) .MOV FILE (off an enhanced CD Single)
    (3) .MPG FILE (off an enhanced CD Single)

The Promo Only videos I extracted using DVDExtractor in OS9. The PCM audio files I put through Soundhack, hacked the headers and resaved as .aif files. The M2V files I tried as they were, then through MPEG Append.

Both the .mov & .mpg files I used QuickTime to save the video to DV(PAL). I didn't want the music as I substituted my own. I then used Final Cut Pro 1.2 (OS9) to modify the speed of the videos, marry them with my new music, then saved them down using the QT MPEG2 component to m2v & aif files.

All the resulting m2v & aif files I then imported into DVD Studio Pro 1.5, made up a menu and built & burned the disk.

The video that was originally an MPG file plays in colour fine, all the others play fine in my domestic DVD player, but play in B&W in my friend's. He says he's never had any problems before with his machine.

Anyone had similar problems?... What other software could I use to extract a video file editable in Final Cut Pro? Can ffmpegX do the job (I've never used it)?

it sounds like your mates player might have problems playing pal, or their settings might be off. like their set up for ntsc or somehting. i'm in the states (ntsc) and when i first started getting pal dvd's i ran in to this problem a few time till i ot some settings right. do other pal dvd's play fine in thier dvd player?? or if they are connected via an s-video cable, sometimes if those get loose you get a b/w signal.
pants on, pants off, pants the floor.

I agree with the ntsc/pal settings. If i put in a dvd into my player and it plays in color its in the proper "stage" If i switch by pushing the pal/ntsc button on my remote it gets black and white. Push again to multi (both pal and ntsc) its back to color.

It is most likely that, or it could even be the tv!

  4. Thanks guys, it looks like it's the TV that's faulty - it's always the most simple things!!!

crazy how it can be like that. Most "newer" tv's dont have this problem so much as older ones do...
