It has been rumored that Brocolli productions has reacquired the rights to this book (which were "lost" when the book was first sold to American television, in a relative short hour show that starred Barry Nelson as the true first James Bond (although not a movie -- here's a good link to the full story: http://www.universalexports.net/Movies/royale54.html ). If so, we may finally see a good version of this, although my preference would be to use an entirely new Bond for a one-off story about the "early days" similar to what they appear to be doing now for Batman. 2. Ah... yes.

See, that's what happens when you get old -- you forget things that happen in this (very long) thread you've been participating in. Sorry.

While I was trying to find the source for this rumor (looking elsewhere, wrongly) I came across this interesting review of the original CR movie.

    http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/28/casinoroyale1.html

Now, my own take is this is exactly the kind of overinflated, overanalyzing piece of drivel that passes for "serious film criticism" but it IS interesting.

As a content producer myself, I find that often people attribute things to your work you not only never intended, but couldn't possibly have meant. It kind of reminds me of all the overanalyzing people have done with Beatle's lyrics, when all they wanted to do was put words that sounded good together ("Yesterday" was "Scrambled Eggs" for the longest time).

To me CR is still a big overindulgent mess of a film that has one or two enjoyable spots (I really like Jimmy Bond). Who knows, maybe someday "Gigli" will be revered as a work of high art <bg>?

    Hello,

I bumped into this in a forum search. Pierce Bronsan, hands down! He's just too smooth not to win! Besides he can pull off the one liners and do the action pretty well .

Sean Connery is James Bond. Everyone else is a cheap rip-off.

Can you see someone besides Arnold playing the Terminator, or someone besides Keanu Reeves playing Neo/Mr. Anderson? Come on ...

    Hello,

    Umm... ok..

But the NEO bit is weak. OK Arnold is Terminator, no question there. But there are other action stars that could have pulled off neo. Bradd Pitt and Matt Daimon could have done it well (not that I like them but they could have played it)

The Terrorist Supermarket intro from Tomorrow Never Dies is the best action movie sequence ever made IMHO.

As for how Connery ended up...

But they didn't. Reeves was Neo in the first one and did a damned good job. Discussing who might have made a good Neo is moot.

A parallel to the Bond situation is if you had Terminator movies continue with The Rock, then Andre The Giant, then Richard Moll all playing Arnie's role. Not believable, and the reason why when Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond, I never watched another 007 movie. No point because Connery was 007. Not Moore, Dalton or Brosnan. They probably did fine jobs, but they should have had their own identity instead of glomming onto the Bond character that Connery had refined. BAH! :P

If you feel that strongly about it would you have wanted them to not make James Bond for the last what, 20 odd years?????? I think they got good replacements.

Exactamundo. They shouldn't have made Bond movies after Connery was finished.

Jeesh! Rather picky aren't we????? What's wrong with continuing one of the best action series ever made (regardless of who stars in it)???

Don't want to get involved really, but I just wanted to put my two penneth in here.

Sometimes a character is bigger than any of the actors that portray them. One that springs to mind is Sherlock Holmes. Many say that Basil Rathbone was Holmes, but then along came Jeremy Brett in the 90s TV series.

Bond like Holmes was a published fictional character before the films were made and thus open to many variations of interpretation from many different actors.

Like any published fictional character, there will always be a difinitive version, but there is nothing wrong with other actors playing that character. How many Hamlets, Romeos, Oliver Twists, Richard IIIs, Batmans, Robin Hoods, Ivanhoes, Supermans, Macbeths, Toad of Toad Halls, Frankenstein's Monster, Hercule Poirots, Draculas, etc.

Let's not hijack the thread, shall we? We're not here to debate the Bonds, merely to register our votes and explain why we feel that way. Will you change my mind? Ummm ....nyooo. Will I change your mind? Don't care. As always Yoda ......peace!

I confess I didn't read all five pages so this may have ben said already. (I hope to have some more time later)

As far as the best actor to play Bond I have to say Sean Connery. But I really like Moore because I didn't think he took it so serious. Just about all the other actors played the part so straight in what were somewhat rediculous situations, but Moore would sometimes show disbelief of the situation or atleast act suprised by an attack or something. I think that he took it as a tounge in cheek kind of movie rather than being stuck on himself. But, Hey, who knows maybe that is the way the directors wanted things. Any good actor could have pulled off playing Bond If you will let yourself be entertained by what is presented.
IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT?

I think it depends on the type of films you like, if your a fan of the books then its Connery and Dalton.

If you like Serious action thrillers then its Connery and Dalton.

If you like silly action movies, then its Moore or Brosnan.

OHMSS is one of the best films, Lazenby isnt bad i think.

Only Connery and Brosnan have managed to put the charm, toughness and wit all together.
Moore had the charm and wit, but looked too soft.
Dalton had the toughness and some of the charm, but had no wit.
Lzaenby kinda had them all, but to a much lesser degree than Connery or Brosnan.

Im a definite Connery man as you cant beat Dr No and From Russia With Love, Brosnan is good, but apart from Goldeneye, all his films have been quite poor.

    1:Sean Connery
    2:Pierce Brosnan
    3:Timothy Dalton
    4:George Lazenby
    5:Roger Moore
