  1. Hi, all

    - I was wondering what kind of technique (Standards) do commercial factories use to press commercial dvds. All these commercial dvds seems to be compatible with any player you play them on.

    - By the way what is pressing exactly? Can you explain in quick few words?

    - Why do we have to experiment to get compatible dvd using a PC? Isn't there any standards?

-Also something non-related question. I have a box of japanese episodic serial anime. Some of the dvds play and some don't play at all on Playstation 2 (old version). I can't seem to find an answer to this. Maybe some of you might have an answer to this.

    Thanx

  2. It's all about the reflections.

This Site gives a great breakdown on the differences between R and RW technology, and how it relates to the reflectivity issue.

This Site goes through the entire pressing process in pretty good detail. The pressing process is a mother-father process used to create a master stamper.

In a nutshell and to simplify, R and RW discs reflect back less light than pressed discs. Older optics were not tuned for these lower light levels, hence they often cannot read R discs and generally won't even recognize the existence of an RW disc.
