I have lots of home movie (MiniDV) where I used a handheld mic. The mic is mono, so the sound only comes out of one speaker.
What is the best way to mix the sound during the editing process so that I get (fake) stereo sound? So I need to extract the sound from the AVI file, play with the WAV in an audio program, and then stick it back to the AVI file? Again, what software can I do this with.

sound forge has a mono to stereo setting with invert phase psuedo - stereo setting or just mono to stereo
just throw your DV avi into that and re-render audio (select avi/DV) (it will render to another dv avi without touching your video)"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
You should be able to do this right in your video editing program (unless it's too crippled). I use Vegas 4 to edit and burn caps of old home videos that have mono sound. When I render the video I specify stereo for the audio and it just puts the mono on each track.

Or, for a quicker solution when recording in the future, buy one of these for $1.99 (should be available from Radio Shack) or use this website: http://www.audiogear.com/AudioAdaptersMini.html
Then you'll have the same audio going to both channels when you record, and you don't have to futz around with any programs later.
