Just bought a Formac Devideon, but my computer will not recognize it. At all.
Got a G4, 440Mhz, OSX 10.2.6. When I insert a disk in the drive, the Finder asks me what I want to do, but will not open the disk in the Finder or in Disk Utility/Copy. Error message says that the drive is not supported. The software that comes with the drive also seems to not recognize it; when I open the DiscBurn app, it asks me to insert a disk, but when I do, nothing happens.
Any insights from devideon owners? Am I missing a crucial OSX extension? or a driver from Formac? Help a brother out, please.

Do you have toast? or another 3rd party burning software?
If so set the action to open that app when a disk in inserterd. It should work then. Some drives are not supported by the Diskcopy (but this one should be, at least I think so?!?) I dont have that drive so I dont know specifically, but if toast cant run it then something is definately messed up. -
That isn't working either. While Toast appears to recognize the driver in some respects, it won't allow it to burn to anything other than a DVD-R, despite the fact that the drive is supposed to be able to burn CD-Rs. And I get a mysterious error message when trying to burn data onto DVD-R, full of hieroglyphs and whatnot.
I may have to take this thing back. Any advice on a external DVD-R for Mac OSX that actually works? -
a friend of mine just ordered THIS NICE EXTERNAL DVD-/+r/rw drive!!!
make sure you specify Item number 300679 (the mac one) not the other one (the pc drive)
Heck, this is what i paid for my 2x dvd-rw back when i bought it! Man, how the prices have dropped lately!!!!
I would go with this one if you ask me!!! -

It also comes with Toast Lite and CaptyDVD.
If you want it to work with iTunes and Disc Burner, make sure you go here to download the Pioneer device plug-in. Otherwise, buy Toast Titanium 6.
If you get the internal LaCie, you can even make it work with iDVD, as long as you download the Pioneer device plug-in... -

Your drive should work. I have heard of this drive before and its ability to work on a macintosh sytem. Have you though about calling the comany tech support? Surely there is a tech support number in the papers you have.
per your question on external burners in general, there is NOTHING that would limit your ability for them to work other than they dont integrate with iApps directly. (some do with plugins as seen)
In general, a firewire external drive will work just like an internal one with respect to its ability to read/burn via the os/toast (respectively)
Also, id appreciate it if you would keep like posts in like topics. No need to wander out of your own topic and make a new one that is the same as the one you have already -
i believe I may just have a bum drive. Based on my dealings with Formac support so far, I'm gonna return the thing and get a different one tomorrow.
Sorry about the repeat post. I did not realize that was a faux pas. Please understand it was borne of frustration, and many late nights sweating over my poor Mac. -
no problem, just have to keep order here. otherwise it can get crazy!
If you can return it I would. How much did you pay for it?!?
these days you can even get a decent internal drive and a firewire enclosure for it for a decent price...
Like I said, LaCie drives are really nice, and id go with the one in my post earlier. -
We use all Formac drives and swear by them... The problems you are describing sound like its just a lemon though. We have never had problems using our Devidion drives, especially not like the ones you described.
Since you are already dealing with Formac, and you are going to return it, i would give them another chance -- -
He might also try re-installing his Formac Devideon software (make sure it's 2.5) for the Formac website (not your disk).
I vaguely recall having to do this when I got mine. -
