I have a mintek 2100 and the tray will not open, when hitting the open button on the unit or remote. Mintek will service the unit but you must pay $45.00. I can count the times I've used it on one hand. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

  2. stick a paper clip into the emergency eject hole thats the tiny tiny little hole on the front of the drive. Then rub some butter into the "joints" of the drive to ease its stiffness. 8)

    Not the headphone jack...

I am not trying to be a smart ass but you get what you pay for you buy cheap you get cheap. I mean really if you bought a dvd player to enjoy movies with a superior sight and sound and you get a cheap ass brand thats what you will get I mean 45 bucks for repair? For that put in another 45 bucks and get a panasonic or pioneer or sony and you will be happy as can be...

O.K., guys, let's not give him too hard of a time for buying a Mintek. It seems a lot of people like them because of the ease of region/MV hacks and being able to play MP3 and raw Mpeg's. I'll bet more than a few people on this forum have one for this purpose, or as a second player for the kids, etc.
That said, you might want to open the unit up and check out the drive gears. Most of these units have a motor/drive belt arrangement that loads and unloads the disc. If you can find the belt, remove it and use some rubbing alcohol on it to clean it off from wear/smog damage. Usually these belts dry out over time, and smog can make them slick and degrade the rubber to where it stretches out or just slides instead of gripping the pulley it is on. Use a rag and alcohol and just pinch it between your fingers and pull it through your fingers inside the cloth to remove a thin layer of rubber. You should see a little black area on your rag, good. Just don't pull so hard you stretch or break the belt. If you do, you can probably find a new one a Radio Shack or your local electronics part store (usually just by matching up the size, not necessarily by part #). Don't forget to use a q-tip and the alcohol to clean the pulleys where the belt rides, too - very important. You may find this will cure your problem - for a while. If possible, you should get a new belt, so it won't be dried out, worn, stretched, etc. for a while. Cheaper than buying a new DVD player - a new belt shouldn't set you back more than a dollar or two.
--and any manufacturer that uses belts (most of them) will have the same problem someday - doesn't matter how expensive. The only ones that don't have this problem are the gear drive assemblies, but they have their own problems (noise, etc.) and the belt drive is usually the cheaper way, requires less gears. It only needs one motor and a pulley. Less parts=cheaper to make.

One other thing I forgot to mention, though it's not very likely. Check and make sure that all the buttons on the front of the unit "click" when you press them, and that none are jammed in the "down" position. This used to happen on Sony's (esp. car stereo) and it would lock up all functions on the unit except power. Press every button on the cabinet and make sure they all have a "positive click" to them. Like I said, not very likely, but not impossible either.

  8. also try to unplug the dvd player from the power socket, wait about a minute, then plug the system in and press eject and see what happens.
I let a friend of mine borrow a DVD+R and it got stuck in here dvd player. It would not eject. so I told her to unplug it and plug it back in and it worked. so try it!

Go to your nearest Walmart, or Walmart web site and buy a new Apex for a few dollars more than it will cost for repair.

If it is the drive that is broken, you might be able to swap it with a cheap DVD-rom drive for a computer. Check the forums at http://www.nerd-out.com Mintek is a Shinsonic brand of DVD player.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?
