  1. i was talking to the cable tech and he said in my area they are sniffing out people running servers and forcing them to upgrade to a differant plan.

i post to the newsgroups alot.not quite 24/7,i do take breaks to download :P
my bandwidth usage would be the same as someone running a server,if my upload was at the cap

could they say that i was running a server?

    i'm not worried,just a

They might decide to cap you upload amount. But that is pushing it. They did say unlimited right?

Make sure you do not have a servers running (ftp, etc.) mostly they go sniffing for the common ports, and if something receives their query, then they shut you off. Normally they say it is for protection from virus. But sometimes they also actually connect to see if you have a server running. Always use non standard ports for your FTP server. Also if your firewall has this feature, make sure it only allows users of listed IPs to connect, and that all others are refused. You could also learn what IPs the ISP is using and add those to the block list in your router, then all ports will come back as refused for those IPs. If your don't have a hardware firewall to do these things, check out routers from Linksys and D-link. Also get some logging software to see who is doing what against your firewall. WallWatcher is one I have used with Linksys.

You can also forward certain ports to an IP on your network that does not exist. Like 192.168.1.250 and just make sure that no computer is ever assigned that IP.

You could also use even more bandwidth be downloading 24/7 with something like NewsBin pro that will allow multiple connections. That is designed to maximise you through put. Max you connection for a week and see what they say
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

  3. I doubt they will target you for being online 24/7. tons of people are that have routers as the routers autoconnect. I would wager that they would monitor your upload amount, not the time you spend, to determine if investigation is nessisary. Then they may scan your ports to see if any are recieving (like TVI said).

But uploading a text message is miniscule compared to pictures or mp3 files. You whould have to post hundreds of times to equal the bandwidth needed for just one mp3 transfer. You have nothing to worry about. Unless of course you actually are running a server.

My PC runs 24/7 on eMule (you have to, in order to get up on the queues). In a month, I easily d/l 40 GB and upload 30 GB. I haven't had any complaints yet from my ISP. Hell, that's what a high bandwidth connection is for - more speed, more data. That's what you're paying for. (And don't worry, guys. I'm d/l ancient Russian music and films for my wife, that have no copyright, not new American movies and music. Well, maybe just a little porno )

In that case I'm sure we have crossed paths sometime before. I'm pretty much the same user name everywhere I go, including usenet. Just made my life easier. Though I must admit, I haven't been to active in about the last year on usenet. Some things have been in the way for that. But a little here, and a little there.

If you D/L that much a week, what kind of connection are you on? Seems to be way faster than standard cable or dsl. Either that or I've been out of the loop for awhile. Don't think I could do that much data on dsl even maxed at 700kbps, but then I haven't tried either.

What servers are you using. I'm always looking for good service. Right now I'm on Giganews, and fairly happy for what I do, though Easynews has it's uses too just haven't gotten an account there yet.

i use astraweb.its the best unlimited news server right now.
    it has speed caps though.
    $15 plan 4x500kbps(2mbps)
    $10 plan 4x150kbps(600kbps)
    good completion,retention around a week.
they also have pay as you go plans with no caps for those that dont download alot.
my second server is newsfeeds.has the retention for bigger groups and the speed for the smaller groups.
