I captured an MPEG with MP2 audio. The picture is good and the sound is OK but it sounds like it's too loud and a little garbled, like when you stand too close to a microphone, almost a digitized sound. It's hard to explain, can anyone help me?

just using a basic MPEG capture card PowerVCR 2 and a loop cable to my AC97 audio card

Have you tried turning the RECORD level down ?
It's not necessarily the line in level on the volume control.
Options - Properties - Recording - etc
It's not an ATI is it ?
