I tried to convert the .avi-files I got from ffmpegX with the unix-tool mp4creator into an .mp4-container, but it’s a bit buggy... So is there another way to convert .avi into .mp4??

Well, you can play mp4-files with quicktime 6 without having installed 3ivX- or DivX-codec.

You can also play the .avi with Mplayer (or VLC) which is far superior in performance and supports subtitles and much more.
