AVI repair or correction info?

I've got two avi files that will not convert via ffmpgX, they go a little more than halfway, then crash due to an error in the file of some sort, the rrors all mention something about a header being incorrect, is there a program that fixes broken headers, or can I do it with the terminal, or what? I tried converting them with Cleaner, but an estimated 134 hour conversion time scared me off!!! All I want to do is convert them to MPEG so I can demux then build my image in Sizzle...Galactica? You up to this one?
alos, if I have a .mov file, it doesn't have elementary streams does it? I assume I'll have to convert it to MPEG?
