  1. Hi everyone,

I convert a lot of home DV and ultimately create DVD's. Like many on this forum I use a variety of tools.

I currently capture raw DV to Ulead VS7 and section out the parts I want into .AVI files. I use MS MovieMaker to create titles and still slideshows and output these to .AVI.

I then use Ulead VS7 to bring in all of the .AVI clips, arrange, add transitions etc and re-save to a final .AVI. which I transcode in TMPGENC.

Am I incurring generational loss by clipping to .AVI and then saving again as .AVI? If so, how much of a quality loss occurs?

    Thanks,

  2. I do not think that there is any loss at the time of splitting as soon as you did not modify (adding titles and so on) into file. After you add or change anything, then yes, you will lose quality (a little).

  3. If your clipping and copying the AVI snippets, then you should have no loss. If you are compressing them in any fashion you might be. My general rule of thumb.

You should use a program like mediastudio which does non linear editing. You dont have to worry about generation loss.

Both Ulead VideoStudio and Ulead MediaStudio Pro feature Smart Render technology, which basically means the .avi files you save won't be re-rendered except at those specific points where you've inserted a title or a transition or during those segments where you have applied a filter.

I'm afraid even with Smart Render technology, it's impossible to avoid *some* re-rendering at those specific points in your project unless your project is a cuts-only project with no titles.

The best way to minimize loss of quality is to make certain your project settings match the specific properties of your SOURCE video.

For example, if you input DV .avi video with the following properties...

    NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
    Microsoft AVI files
    24 Bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
    Field Order A
DV Video Encoder -- type 1
DV Audio -- NTSC, 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, Stereo

...then make sure your project settings are adjusted to match.

In this way, video that isn't touched by titles, filters, or transitions will not be re-rendered and quality will be preserved as much as possible.

    Hope this helps,

This is very nice definition. Same applies to Pinnacle Studio version 8 too

Mediastudio has cginfinity so you can create a menu with this program, save it as a cginfinity file and insert it into the mediastudio timeline. Then you can edit your video or do what you want to it and the cginfinity file will not lose its quality.
