    I just installed a new firewire card (INTEK21, Model TK9908, 6-to-4 pins).

When connecting my camera (JVC GR-D30U) to the computer (WIN XP) via the firewire I get a screen stating that the computer recognized the camera but when I open the editing program (Windows movie maker) it doesn't recognize the movie inside the camera, I just get a black screen with no option to capture anything.

When I connect the same camera to my laptop (also win xp) it all works fine (the firewire is 4-to-4, have no idea what make the card is).

Can you think of what the problem might be?

    Thank you very much.

I often have the same problem with my Canopus ADVC-100 on one particular computer (it works fine on the other PC's). The way I fix it is to reboot the computer with the Canopus attached and powered on. After that it works perfectly. So try rebooting with your camera attached and turned on, and see if that helps.

Thanks for the info, but sadly it didn't work.

The problem is that it does recognize that the camera is connected but not the movie on the tape...

    Any other ideas?

I usually try the simplist solution first. If your cable is the same with both computers,it sounds like a problem with the firewire card. If you can try the card in another computer, that is one to test it. Remove the card and reinstall it. Try it in a different PCI socket. For software solutions, Make sure you have the DV codec in your computer and have the latest necessary OS upgrades and drivers installed.

I tryed a different firewire card, a different pci slot, and still the same results.

What is the DV coded that you mentioned? where can I find the version I have and where do I update it? I do start to think that this is a software problem in my computer and not a firewire problem.

    Thanks again,
    Efrat.

Look here for DV codecs: https://www.videohelp.com/tools#Codecs
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

OK, thanks!! now at least I know what DV CODEC is

I installed the Panasonic DV Codec and it didn't change anything.

I went to my laptop and looked under the device manager to see if the codec is the same and found out that in my desktop (the computer with the problem) I don't have the legacy video capture device and on my laptop I do (WDM video for windows capture driver).

Any ideas how I can install that? I tried to google it, but couldn't find anything except article that says that in XP it is already installed (which obviously is not the case in my XP...)

    Again, Many thanks...
