  3. Probably more Off Topic than Feedback related so I will move it there.

The comic actually reminds me of the multiple times I spend explaining the difference between CD and DVD's to novice people.

    Too true!

My Mom still can not set the time on her VCR. :c* She used to call me to come over and do it every time the power went out.

I haven't even bothered telling her I make DVDs. :c* (sigh)

  5. My mother is reluctant to even play DVDs. She does not like the on screen menus. I keep telling her "If all you want to do is watch the movie, just hit the play button on the remote. It will work 90% of the time." But it never sticks.

  7. I've quit trying to educate my father-in-law. I just reset it for him, which is often because the power goes off at his house several times a year.
Last year, I bought him a VCR that was supposed to pick up the time from the TV signal and auto-set it. Unfortunately, he doesn't want to run the signal through the VCR. He just feels more comportable using the A-B switch to select TV or VCR.
Just what is this reality thing anyway?

Ahhh. Looks like I'm in good company with respect to technologically-challenged relatives. :c)

I feel much better now. :c)

Both my mom and dad are very educated people and are very smart...but when it comes to computers, it's like a foreign language to them. One time I tried to teach my dad how to use the mouse, and I said "OK, move the arrow to the icon"...my dad literally picked up the mouse off the pad and moved it physically. One of the funniest first time experiences I have ever seen.

  10. Its not just older relatives that are technologically challenged.
Here in the Uk we have a system for programming VCR's called videoPlus. I don't know if it used elsewhere though I suspect it is. To work correctly it requires the time and date on the VCR to be set correctly, just as manual setup of recording does. My inlaws bought a new, very chepa VCR recently, but could not get the videoplus recording feature to work properly, so they took it back to the store. The staff tested the machine and determined it was faulty, so provided a replacement, identical machine. Of course, wehn they got this home and plugged it in, it had exactly the same fault! I visited a few days later, was asked to help. Setting the time/date was all that was required and all worked perfectly.

My point here is that even the staff at the 'specialist AV store' couldn't work this out, so how are 80 year old technophobes expected to cope.

    :c))))))

My Dad graduated from Villanova as a Civil Engineer and now owns his own large company. He has yet to come within touching distance of a PC. It took me 3 years to convince him to computerise his co., then he finally caved in and let me.

But he had me make 3 paper copies of every single thing that went into it!

After that experience, he hasnt let me teach him how to use a computer...although my mom has gotten a lot better. Both my parents are doctors...but I guess they dont have the technology gene. I have plenty of fun stories about my dad.
