Hi folks.
Just bought a Sony DRU-10 and did the conversion to DRU-500. Worked fine, writer seen by Windows and all apps (Nero/DVDxcopy) as DRU-500.
(Nero infotool only sees it DVD writing capabilities as DVD-R though, I haven't tried to make a DVD yet).
Main problem is that I can't burn CD-R. All the blank disks I have tried come up as CD-Rom and are rejected. I've tried different versions of Nero, and a few different types of blank CD-R (all of which work in every CD-Writer I've had). Even tried a CD-RW and that was rejected.
I've tried burning an image and making a normal data discs, same problem both times.
Am I missing something ?
Could the flashing process have affected this or is it just really picky on CD-R media as well as DVD media ?
Would really appreciate any help.
PC is a Dell Precision 530, 2 x 2Ghz Xeon, Intel mobo, 1Gb RAM. No known problems.
Sony drive is secondary slave. DMA enabled.
cheers,
Colin

Trying to put firmware from one device into another is a bit of a black art. Sony has been known to use drives from Lite-On before now, and if you've put firmware for the wrong device in there, you might have buggered it up AND said goodbye to the warranty while you were at it.
Not all firwares are created equal - do an Internet search in general to see if anyone else has done this and what, if any, precautions they might have had to make. For example, look out for disclaimers like "only works with hardware revisons after 1.3C", or "Do not use with drives with a model number ending A". -
Hi,
thanks for the reply..
I did a bit of reading before flashing the firmware and it went smoothly.
The procedure is http://forum.rpc1.org/viewtopic.php?t=16646
I'll give a while to see if there are any more ideas then probably flash it back.

I just downloaded the tool to flash it back to a DRU-10.
As part of the procedure you change the IDE interface to PIO mode.
Did this and rebooted, and all of a sudden the darn thing works !!!! (Still as a DRU-500A). So at least it would seem the upgrade to 500A is OK, but not great if it wont do UDMA...
I'll post more info if I find out any more..

Hi,
I've been using infotool (it's bundled with later versions of Nero).
In UDMA mode, Infotool reckons it can r/w CD-R and r/w DVD-R.
In PIO mode mode, Infotool reckons it can r/w any format (apart from dvd-ram)..
Found this on the Sony support site.
