i compared the same movie(dvd-rip downloaded from the net) burned on dvd-r(dvd) and cd-r (svcd). i played them on standalone dvd player and they look same too me ..mayb the svcd quality is alittle bit bad but u can't really tell. Why is it? they are suppose to be different...right?

I'm going to go ahead and give you the benefit of the doubt and assume this DVD was not copyrighted or encrypted.
The DVD format has the capability to support much higher bitrates and higher resolutions, among other things, which will translate to higher quality. But if you take the same source and burn it to both cd and dvd media, its still the same file so the quality will be identical.
The media just holds the data. Its how the data was made that determines the quality. -
