  1. I have a Samsung SM-348 drive which is a combo CDRW+DVDROM drive inside an external USB 2.0 enclosure. This drives works perfectly fine when attached directly via IDE to my computer. Ripping and dvd playback are 100% ok.

When I put this into the usb 2.0 enclosure, the dvd playback and ripping creates distortions in the DVD! I have no idea why.. I've even applied the latest Microsoft USB 2.0 patch that conveniently came out within the past few days (see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=822603). This patch didn't help at all.

It used to run my Pioneer A06 inside this enclosure and it ripped with no problems and did playback fine. Only problem is DVD Xcopy's external drive support is really bad, so I had to swap it with the Samsung combo drive (samsung in enclosure, pioneer in computer).

Anyone have any ideas? I find it odd that there is an incompatibility between samsung and external enclosures?

Just a guess, but perhaps the SM-348 is running hot inside the external enclosure. While I know of no specific heat problem with the SM-348, there is a known heat problem with external enclosures in general.

Also, try ripping with either DVDShrink or DVD Decrypter (both free) and see if you have the same problem.

The enclosure has a built in fan, so it shouldn't be getting hot at all. As an experiment, I tried playing video immediately after turning it on to remove heat as a possible culprit. no change, still choppen/distorted video.

While it's a problem with ripping with DXC, it's dvd video playback that is also broken. So even if it does work with DVDShrink or DVD Decrypter, it doesn't solve hte playback issue.

I even tried installing WinDVD 5 platinum to play video instead of using PowerDVD and I'm getting the same problem.

    Hmmm, strange occurances.

I know that the Pioneer worked fine, but have you tried switching USB ports, and have you checked to see that the USB card (if any) is seated firmly. We are talking PC's here, anything is possible.

Also, make sure that the region code on the SM-348 is set properly. Region 1 for the USA.

Nothing else I can think of at the moment.

  5. Drive is set to Region 1.

I have 2 front mounted USB 2.0 ports and 2 rear mounted one. I have verified winxp is indeed recognizing it as a usb 2.0 device.. I also took everything off the USB bus (even my mouse) to see if that made a difference..

    nope! <sigh>
