  1. i have a movie in avi format that is in two parts. both parts are 640 x 480, around 650 mb and close to an hour long. i want to burn then to dvd. since mpeg2 encoding takes a while, i want to do it right the first time...so what is the best way to go about this? i figured toast 6 would do the job nicely, but when i drop just one of the files in the dvd window, it shows that the disc is almost full.

also, i did search the forum but didn't really find an answer...i have access to dvd studio pro, but have never used it. if i use ffmpegx or qt to encode to mpeg2, what bitrate would i want to use to fit about 120 min of video on a dvd?

well since its a .avi you want to get it to .mpeg. you can use ffmpegx for this. Bit rate - use the calculator on ffmpegx. But it wont matter much since .avi is way less than dvd quality bitrate.
once you run it through and get a .mpeg just use sizzle to build the dvd image or i think the new ffmpegx will do it also.

To ease the process get them into a .mov shell then proceed with ffmpegx

  3. would i want to use the high or low dvd preset in ffmpegx. the encoding of the avi is very good, like i said, it's 640 x 480 (according to qt).

thanks for any help...i have lots of experience with vcd/svcd, but none with authoring dvds...so i'm still learning this.

higher is better, because if you exceed the bitrate of the avi it doesnt make a difference (at least i dont think it does) because you cant ever get any better than you initally have.

this is my rationalle, and its always worked for me....

  5. Try this app...MPEG2 Works...

    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20867

    or

    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12715

It will work for sure..Dont think about anything just choose PAL/NTSC, 4:3/16:9...App will do the rest...

  7. Ya..

Two resons...Either You are using MPEG2 Works prior to 2.0.2 or Your AVI has "freecopy" sound codec...Thats the only codec which will not work...

There is a easy way to check which AVI can be converted in my app....If You have DivX and 3vix codecs installed on Your machine and Your AVI can be opened in Quick Time, then it can be converted in my app for sure...

Lot of people using my app only for one thing...Converting DivXs to SVCD/DVD...So I tested that very carefully...

Sorry for Your troubles...Please try with some other AVI if You allredy download the 2.0.2 version of MPEG2 Works...

well my .avi can open in quicktime, but there aint no sound. I prefer to leave them this way as that is a "true divx"

    is that my problem??

  9. Sorry but I have to disagree with You.....I dont think that is a true divx...I think that movie was ripped very badly with "copy sound" option in some PC tool...

Anyway, You got my point...If DivX movie is playable in QT after You installed DivX and 3vix component it will be convered in my app...

    Regards...

interesting... well any how, it seems to be chuggin along now. about 100 megs of .mp2 encoded and 1.2 gigs of a .wav
Is that white bar a "progress bar" cause if so there is nothing showing up as being progress.

how long does this process usually take? just curious.

Thet progress bar its not a true progress bar...Thats the trick I made in Apple script to look nice.. until I make real one...It will move 3 times...1. When it finishes encoding audio, 2. when it finishes scaling and encoding video and 3. when it finishes multiplexing and splitting...

Process of converting of 2 hours movie to SVCD/DVD take aprox. 6-8 hours on 900Mhz G4 single proc. machine...Thats slow but mu scripts are optimized for dual processor Macs and they do 2-pass highest quality encoding optimizied for standalone /external/ DVD players...In future vesrions Ill implement "Normal" and "Fast but low" quality scripts and user settings...

    Regards,

Great! well i got a dual 1.2 ghz so ill tell you how long it takes. so far only 1 hour into it and im at Scaling and encoding video... please be patient and the progress bar is about ohhh 25% complete.

    so far so good.

I previewed the .m2v looks amazingly good for being a divx!
this is perhaps the easiest divx to dvd ive seen yet!

    Posting my findings:
1hr 45 min of video took less than 6 hours (not sure exacly how long, but I came back in 6 hours and it was done) to encode .avi to .m2v and .mp2
    disk image is 2.15 gigs.

(my question is how to get 2 divx now into 1 dvd since there is still 2 gigs of space that can fit.)

    Any suggetions?

    great app though

    everything synced perfectly with Sizzle!
    fabulous

Huh...Yes...Well You have to author DVD in some authoring app and add a chapter.....Or You can encode one more DivX /90 minutes long/, then join two muxed MPEGs in one BIG file, then demux to audio+video track and then use Sizzle...Youll find Mux/Demux options under Tools menu....

Maybe its better if You encode DivX into SVCD...Then Youll get audio+video track and muxed MPEG2 properly divideed onto 2 CDs...After that use VCD builder and make Yourself 2 SVCDs on regular CD-Rs...

    Just an opinion..

Serbian, my .avi movie will not play in Quicktime but plays in VLC. I used your app to convert it, but when I attempted to open the relevant files in Sizzle, the icons were greyed out and could not be selected. I can only assume that my original was not done correctly and is not a "good" .avi rip.

  17. If You encoded Your avi into SVCD there is a possibility that Sizzle wont open Your audio and video tracks...If You want to burn on DVD and play it in external DVD player as DVD /not SVCD/ and author it with Sizzle You should use DVD conversion options...

If You wanna make SVCD and play it external DVD player as SVCD You should use VCD Builder app for authoring SVCDs and VCDs...

Or maybe You use Sizzle 0.5 version which makes a lot of troubles...There is a few postings here regarding that matter...

  18. I did convert it to DVD and your program worked fine. There must be something wrong with the original. I have used various programs to convert it and Quicktime still says that it cannot play it. I am going to try the VCD conversion and see what it does.
    Thanks for your help.

Everyone knows the mac platform rules the minority, so therefore with that logic, the Minority Rules!! hehe..

Just kidding around of course or am I ..ummm..
anyway, its nice to be able to use apps like fourty-two and MPEG2Works to get the job done and better while enjoying the refinements the mac platform offers..
