avi conversion

ive downloaded an avi file which i want to put onto a dvd, but everytime i try and burn to dvd the file isnt recognised.
im using nero express 6 and intervideo dvd.
i can burn it onto a vcd but unfortunately that wont play on his playstation2.

ive been told that i may have to convert the file to another format, but i have no idea which format i would have to use.

so if any one could tell me which format to use and a basic idiots guide to how to convert it i would be really grateful.
