  1. Yeah the DVD standard calls for either AC3 or PCM audio for NTSC players (the PAL standard calls for support for AC3, MP2 or PCM). Even thou it's not supported pretty much everyplayer will play it. It's the default audio format for VCD/CVD/SVCD.

I'm on an NTSC system, the only difference I notice with mp2 vs ac3 is the mp2 comes through super, super loud on my system - if I do two identical video tracks, but one track has mp2 and the other has ac3 (both from the same wav source) the mp2 track will be twice as loud.

  3. OK fellas,

I've got the 3 hour mpeg for the DVD. It has AC3 audio. What authoring program should I use to create a DVD from an mpeg file with AC3 audio?

DVD Maestro : it is free ,widely available and has a friendly 'point and click' interface. :P (now now - don't all pounce at once MOD's that is a joke)

On a serious note, I recommend DVDLab - Simple but powerful interface.

  6. I went another route. Capture using Movie Mill 2.0 ( its free ) and allows variable bit rate, constant bit rate captures and selectable resolutions, pcm, or mpeg1, layer2 audio. Then load into MyDvd 5.0 Deluxe which converts the mpeg1, layer2 audio to ac3, add chapter points, and burn. I would not recommend editing with MyDvd 5.0 which it can do but it will then re-encode the whole movie to mpeg2 cbr at 8 Mb/s. It will not re-encode if only chapter points are added and will accept mpeg2 vbr without change.
