On a fresh install of Win98SE, I have installed the DivX 5.05/GAIN bundle and the LAME MP3 codec. While I am able to view AVIs with MP3 audio data in WMP 6.4, DivX Player 2.1 complains of a "Tag 85" - MP3 codec missing. GSpot shows that the audio stream is MP3 160k, and that I have 3 codecs installed for it, one of which is LAME. I assume that, for some reason, WMP is able to locate the MP3 codec, while DivX Player is not.

Somewhat related, when I go to encode an AVI in VirtualDub 1.5.4, and select "LAME MP3" in the audio compression dialog, I am met with a list similar to:
  • 48000 Hz, Stereo 40KB/s
  • 48000 Hz, Mono 40KB/s
  • 48000 Hz, Stereo 32KB/s
  • etc.
However, the listing does not indicate a bitrate such as 320kbps CBR, 160kbps CBR, 160kbps ABR, and such. I am left to guess what bitrate I will encode at. Any ideas as to either of these?
