  1. the avi file I am working with is 512 x 288.. this is invalid according to the program I'm using which takes the avi straight to the dvd.

the valid frame sizes are (720 x 576) (720 x 480) and (704 x 480).. how does one go about changing the frame size of an avi without changing its format? also, which of the thre frame sizes is an NTSC 4:3 aspect ratio?

What program ?. You need to encode your AVI to mpeg2 for DVD compliance. The resolution will be made compliant when you encode. I suggest using TMPGEnc and using a DVD template.
