I have been trying to get the English Subtitles to work in my Back-Up Copy of "BulletProof Monk", there are parts where they speak in what I guess is Chineese and the English Subtitle Apears on those instances!

No, Matter what I do I can not seem to get them to show up on the ripped .Vob files or on the final burn to DVD-R. There are several Subtitle Streams! Im Using "Smart Ripper" and DVD-2-One! Also tried DVD Decrypter.

Any Help or Pointing in the Right Direction would be greatly appreaciated, Thanks in Advance!

Do you rip all the files off the dvd?

after you rip play the VIDEO_TS folder and see if the subtitles are there.

after you use DVD2One play the VIDEO_TS folder and see if the subtitles are still there

I havnt used DVD2One but doing this should help identify which step you loose your subtitles

Yes, When using smart ripper, I rip all files

after you rip play the VIDEO_TS folder and see if the subtitles are there
I checked each .Vob file after the rip, and after being processed by DVD-2-One! The Subtitles are not there in both cases. It is confusing because when i play an individual .Vob file directly from the Original DVD they do not show up then either! But when i play it back normally they show up.

When I burn entire movie to a Test DVD-RW and play back on my stand alone player they still do not show up, but when i play the Original Disc "Wella" they appear! I have not had this problem before in over 20 backups.

I Did notice something while playing back the original on an older DVD-Ram drive at work, I had to select an english subtitle stream at the bottom of a list of six streams before they would show up, the first English stream I selected would make all words come up in subtitles. The second at the bottom that I selected made subtitles show up only when they spoke in chineese (which is as it should be) all other players did this auto. Upon checking the different subtitle streams it seems that one is English forced, I Think!

  4. What version of BPM do you have ?

I've got the retail R2 version, and those subtitles are in the movie frame, not DVD generated subtitles. They are reserved for the "other", full subtitles - the foreign language subs are part of the video and can not be removed from the frame !

This is a retail version as far as i can tell, don't know where you find that info exactlly! Bought it at "Best Buy"!

I Thought that those subtitles might be in the frame, because they only show up in certain instances when chinese is being spoken, so the movie makes more sense! Which makes it all the more a puzzle why they won't show up in DVD-R! (Also read what I wrote about using Old Ram-Drive Above)

Let me know if when you look at your original disk around 1:47 seconds into movie (VOB_1) when BPMs are fighting on overhead bridge, and Chow, keeps master from falling and says "Master" does this show up when viewing individual .Vob on Original disk! On Mine it does not show! But in regular play using Sonic CinePlayer they do!

  6. AFAIK, there is only one version in Region 2 - for some reason you tend to get all sorts of different versions in R1. Widescreen for example doesn't seem popular in the R1 areas - you often find two versions of the same disc allowing for widescreen and full screen presentations. You rarely find full screen content alternatives on R2 releases these days.

The exception to the rule here is the Rental Version - these versions often are movie only, or movie plus say a couple of trailers for forthcoming releases and so on. They are different to the retail versions and often are subject to different copyright and licensing issues than the ones destined for retail, off the shelf purchases by Joe Public.

Not only does the content on these discs vary, the way they are produced does sometimes differ as well.

In particular on that scene you mention, there are no DVD generated subtitles at that point. The subtitles in question on my BPM were generated during the production of the movie and effectively superimposed in the video frame. The DVD subtitles (closed caption) kick in the moment they start speaking English half way through the sentence about his training being complete. If you were to back up my copy and inadvertantly strip the subtitles, you would still get the translation at the beginning, but all the hearing impared subtitles following that would be lost.

I hope that makes sense !

It would seem that No Matter what type of DVD I have, If the original had subtitles hard coded into the video frame, there should be some way of getting them on the backup copy!

If anyone knows what I might check, or have heard of anything like this happening! Please let me know!
