  1. Hey all,

I'm going to replace my other WD 40gb drive.
When I replaced my other WD drive, I did a search for the quietest drive and most recommended the Seagate - Barracuda. Thus far, I've really been impressed with Seagate.

I was wondering if anyone had experience with other drives? I'm still looking for the quietest/fastest (quiet over speed if need be)

BTW, it has to be ATA/100/133 not Serial ATA

    Thanks

  2. I hate seagate, and all the seagates I have had were loud and ran hot.

I like IMB/Hitachi They are fast, quite and reliable. Maxtor would be my second choice, and they now have some kind of fluid bearings that are supposed to make them really quiet.

Yep me too. That was until I did some searching and reading. The Seagate - Barracuda IV was list as the best and quietest drive. The the V came out and it go good reviews. They came out with the new bearing before the others....I did notice that Maxtor had new fluid bearings too, but I've never used them. I used to always use WDs but they are/were way to noisy.

  4. I used to swear by IBM now I swear at ibm. I have two 40gb drives one of which is in a box waiting to be rma'd and the other makes a strange noise whenever the head goes near a certain point on the disk. They are nice and quiet when they are working tho. After losing my OS plus 30gb of data I would hesitate to trust them again.

  5. There was a known issue with some of the older 40 gig IBM drives (I think the 60GPX), but the new ones are solid.

Maxtor is really good. I have several and have never had one fail. I have one thats like 5 years old still running strong.

But how quiet are they? Basically, I don't want to hear anything from the drive. That's how my seagate is. I can run defrag or something that does a ton of swaping and I can't hear it

Funny you should say that, I have just had a 40GB maxtor drive go belly up. Not saying they are bad you will get failures with any brand. I have IBM Maxtor and Western Digital drives in my PC

I have used one of the Maxtor with fluid dampening. It is quiet, but not so much as you would notice. It is just as loud as a new Seagate, and a new WD. The plus side is that some of the Maxtors are only 2/3 the height of other hard drives. I know the 30GB is 2/3 height, don't know about the other capacities.
