  2. Well, Ok first, You can only burn both the mpeg and AVI to a dvd if you only plan to view it with your computer, if you want to view with a dvd player then the AVI must be converted to vcd or svcd, I SUGGEST VCD because goin to SVCD will look realy bad quality wise. how compressed is the AVI? The mpeg you can just keep as is just make sure it meets all criteria for burning in the program you are using, I use tmpeg DVDenc and tmpeg dvd author. As long as the mpeg is the rite frame rate, bit rate, and screen size your good to go. screen size is 720x480 for dvd and vcd is 352x240 and svcd is 480x420.

SVCD is much better quality than VCD! And you can have a DVD compliant file with resolutions other than 720x480.

  4. Yes SVCD is a much better quality than VCD however when converting an AVI it will look better if you convert to VCD rather than to SCVD depending on how compressed the avi is if your using an AVI that is very compressed then I would convert to VCD if the AVI is not compressed much then SVCD will look ok. and I was only giving good screen size not saying this is the only size.

Before giving such advice, you really should know what codec is used in the AVI. A DV format would die at VCD by your logic.

This being said, what kind of "AVI" is this ?

  7. I think everyone is complicating the issue. Take your avi's into tmpgenc and convert them to either svcd or vcd (svcd is better quality but will take up more space). However remember when you convert your avis the file sizes will get larger, also you will need to pay attention to different frame rates.

Once all of your files are in mpeg format take them through to tmpgenc dvd author. Load them in and click create. When this has finished you will have a video_ts folder that you can burn with your favourite program (I use nero). I have not gone into any details as guides for all of these processes can be found on the left hand bar.

However if you get stuck feel free to pm me.

*Lordsmurf* I was asuming he can play the AVI on his comp already which has the codec. what type of AVI is it though

    480 x 576 for PAL, 480 x 480 for NTSC.

And why is everyone talking VCD and SVCD anyway when he says he wants to burn to DVD.

I was wondering what all this vcd and svcd talk was about. LOL. Poor guy asked about a dvd. One thing for sure that somebody mentioned was that the avi will get bigger after it is converted to mpeg and the total size may or may not fit on one dvd. My suggestion is to encode the avi to mpeg2-dvd and then use dvd author to combine all the dvd mpegs. If the resulting size is too big, then just reduce it with dvd shrink.

Find out what kind of audio it is and if necessary separate it
and change it to something more appropriate

Your problem is non-trivial because you said you have multiple files in
    multiple formats.
MPEG and AVI tend to be in different classes They need to be treated sepatately.

There are lots of programs that will give a clue, but only if you pretty
much know what they are already.

One of the easiest ways to get lots of info is to get the MovieFactory Demo
and drop the files in to it , and ask for clip info.

Then run Gspot on them and AVI codec

The ultimate goal is to identify all of it and convert it to a common format,

Tell us what you find out and more help will be forthcoming.
