    when i am converting an avi with tmpgenc, i get a black line across the page.

    what causes this problem? is it interlacred or something???

    Did you check if the source had the black line ?
    Otherwise it might be a codec problem.

    no the source was fine!

    how could a codec cause this problem?

    It is possible that the codec, which is the middle ring in a chain of encoding (your file -> codec -> TMPGEnc -> Output file) gives this lines because it can not convert it to the needed format.
    Try determine the codec using GSpot and install the latest version of that codec.
