  1. I've finally gotten iDVD to work okay, and the 90 minute limitation is fine with me, but is there a quick way to convert my MPEG files to .MOV? Cleaner 6 does the job fine, but is godawfully slow (9+ hours per 30 minutes of MPEG) and ffmpgX doesn't have the conversion to .MOV option (as far as I can tell).
I'm using a G4 350, which is a bit slow these days, but all I've got...
Next question, DVDStudio Pro doesn't have that 90 minute limitation, but is it worth the extra cash? Just bells and whistles, or is it truly something more powerful?

Any particular reason in wanting to go from .mpeg to .mov?
Both are playable in Quicktime (well .mpeg2 if you have the playback component) and if you dont you can always just use VLC to view the .mpeg

Per iDVD vs DVD studio pro
thats like comparing a toyota prius (though nice) to a porche boxer.

There is a HUGE difference. Worth the $$? depends if you have that kind of $$ laying around and if the purchase is justified.

Simple lazy home movie making, i wouldnt.
More serious (or OCD type of personality) I would.

    its up to you.
You can see all what it does at

a quick way to .mov? No. But to .avi, yes. Well kinda. You can use Mencoder to convert it to a .avi which is fully editable and exportable in QT.

  4. Well, the main reason to go from MPEG to .MOV is so that iDVD can accept it, it won't take any other kind of file (lacks encoding ability I think). I can make a nice little DVD with iDVD, but if DVDStudio Pro can go whole hog, chapters, subs, languages, etc, it'd be nice to have that to work with, but if it's nothing more than encoding built in, I'll stick with iDVD, the price isn't that good for just encoding (even with an educational discount).
If I convert using mencoder to .AVI> then to Quicktime, will it go faster than the sluggish Cleaner? I don't know why iDVD only accepts Quicktime, but it works, and it was cheap...and for some reason, trying to convert an MPEG file using Quicktime to .MOV doesn't work for some unknown reason, the Apple tech support guy said something about MPEG info still being in the file, anyone know how to strip that out, or better yet, change creator codes or something like that for an instant conversion?
DTP is so much less confusing for me...

QT cannot go MPG to MOV, because the file has to be demuxed first.
QT can only handle the vid stream by default in an MPG,
so when going in QT to MPG to MOV, it will strip out the video,
and leave you with a movie file with no audio.

Better to use ffmpegX to avi to QT mov, or follow what Zero Six
said using Mencoder, to get a container file QT understands
and reads as having a valid video stream and audio stream.
