  1. Hi everyone,
I hope someone could help me.
I have a ATI AIW 9700 PRO and start capturing directly to MPEG2 DVD,
    but have some issues.
why, with some VHS source Tapes (even those original , bought from stores) the capture (or in the preview window) has a bouncing top? Not in the entire footage, but often during capture the top has a white wavy or bouncing look. But with some others tapes it looks OK.
    I am using MMC 8.5.

Actually it seems that the video itself is out of tracking (it looks like it), but I'm sure the tracking is locked ok, because that effect occurs often but not always, in the same VHS tape. Is there a problem with the AIW?

    Any ideas?

    thanks in advance.

Is it overscanning? Sounds like it.
Otherwise, may be a low-quality VCR or you may need a TBC.

    My money is on overscanning.
Read the page I linked up top. The info is at the bottom.

  3. This is normal. It's because the ATI software automatically shows you a cropped preview (you can turn this off) and this has the top, bottom, left and right portions of the vid cut off.

It is just a slight distortion caused by tracking that you see. There is a function in MMC 8.1 and upwards that allows you to crop the image so you don't see this on the final capture. (all it really does is cover up the areas with black).

  4. Hi,

just for the record: I found where the problem is.
Where else? My VCR!!! I just went mad and got a brand new Panasonic and then...the problem's gone. Now I really get a nice capture with my AIW 9700 PRO.
    Settings:
    352x480
    MPEg-2 DVD
    interlaced
    crop video enabled
    video soap none
    48000 khz audio with 256 k
VBR at MAX 4.5 and target 4.2

Dropped frames: 20 out of 160,000 (~2 hours footage)

    Isn't it allright???

  5. 0 dropped frames would be better. considering you are captureing at a small video size and not full 720x480. I never have dropped frames, maybe I'm just lucky 8)

  6. yeah, 0 dropped frames is THE real goal, but I think I'm getting some dropped frames due to VHS source (I hope so ).

Is it a real difference between 351x480 and 720x480 for VHS sorce???
