This is the first time this has happened to me. I ripped the DVD "Malibu's Most Wanted', using the latest DVD Decrypter (file mode), default settings. The original DVD has the default of subtitles 'off'. Since the whole disc was only 3.9GB, I figured no other conversion is needed, it's ready to burn. But when I checked/played it with WinDVD (from my harddrive), it defaulted to having english subtitles ON! I have to manually turn them off. Again, playing from the DVD, subtitles are off, but playing from the ripped DVD files, subtitles are on. Why would this be? It doesn't make sense to me, I didn't think DVD Decrypter would change anything like that. I also don't know how to fix it.

I used to have this problem with a 'converted' movie, ie after I ran a movie-only thru DVD2One, it would play subs on my Apex player. I knew how to fix it with IFOedit, I had to add a command that wasn't there. But this is different, because I am NOT converting the movie in any way. All I'm doing is ripping it, that's it. The riped files then play subs. Strange.

Anyone know how to fix this? The ripped files are still on my harddrive, I'd like to fix it before I burn it. I USED to add a pre-command where one didn't exist, but that it not the case this time.

I was able to resolve this. Previously, I'd look for 'There is no PGC Command Table' and add the pre-command to turn off subs. But this time there was already a command table with 28 pre-commands. All I did was add a 29th pre-command, and it worked.

I copied this from another forum...
Open VTS_01_0.IFO (IFO from main movie) in IfoEdit.
Go to VTS_PGCITI and select VTS_PGC_1.
In the bottom window scroll down to the line "There is no PGC Command Table".
Right click on this line and select "Add PreCommand".
You will get a new line: "1.Pre Command".
Right click 1.Pre Command and select "Edit Command".
Select (SetSTN) Set Audio Stream Nr or (SetSTN) Set Subpicture Stream Nr in the picklist and select the desired stream (First stream is always 0, second stream is 1, etc). -
I have this problem it's no big deal. They only turn on when you play the DVD back from the hard drive when you burn it to a DVD-R it will work fine on your DVD player.

I don't know about the above method, but I know this works -- I use it constantly.
With IFOEdit, open VIDEO_TS.IFO/VMGM_MAT/First Play PGC.
Right click on 1.Pre Command
Choose Insert Command
Right click on 1.Pre Command
Choose edit command
Select (SetSTN)Set Subpicture Stream Nr Stream = 0
Save file.

Sounds like a pretty similar fix. I'm still curious to learn HOW this happened in the first place. Playing the DVD disc on my pc, defaults to no subs. Ripped the DVD (no conversion) and played from the harddrive, defaults to subs on. This is the only movie I've seen this happen on. No biggie... it's fixable... I was just curious.

Read mattcham's explananation why DVDShrink (and others) seems to make the ripped movie play with the subtitle on.
