If looking for a relatively cheap DVD player with quality DVD!!! playback, I'd recommend Panasonic S35. Thou when playing VCD/SVCD, the quality may not be the best.

FYI: since I got a DVD burner, I don't burn VCDs or SVCDs no more. A good quality VCD or SVCD formatted movie will take some time to make (encoding and stuff) and will be of lesser quality than if in DVD format. Then again, you have to put in on several CD-Rs and then price of the CD-Rs used for 1 movie is comparable with price of a DVD +/-R disk you can put the movie on. You'll have to change the disks too, if on several CD-Rs.
