My honest answer is to buy a $40 player that plays both PAL and NTSC. Mintek, Apex and Cyberhome are very nice players for this, just to name a few. In the long-haul, especially if you want to get more PAL in the future, is to do this. Converting take a long time, and does not always give flawless results.

Many NTSC players also play PAL, just not Region 2/4 discs. Maybe a DVD-RW region-free copy will work on your Sony? In fact, if the Sony book does not explicitly exclude PAL, it probably will play it.

  3. Thanks for the info but this is the only PAL DVD I have so I don't really want to buy a new player. Also, I wanted this DVD to be compatible when I brought it over friends house to watch. So, any detailed guides to convert to NTSC DVD would be awesome. Thanks!!

Well the size of the newly created NTSC MPEG-2 depends on the running time of the PAL movie and the bitrate you used.

First you need to convert the PAL running time to NTSC (assuming you are using a method that slows down the 25fps to 23.976fps). This is easy. For example let us say the PAL movie is 115 minutes.

    115 * 25 / 23.976 = 120 (approximately)

So simply use a bitrate calculator and find out what your bitrate should be.

This is no different than any type of MPEG-2 encoding.
