How do i recognise what video files i have

I have a few video files off the net and i want to view them on my TV.

I use VirtualDub and that tells me that most of them are 29,970 fps which i think means that they are ntsc.

how do i find out other info like if they are MPG2 or 1 or DIVX...etc

Unless they are already (S)VCD or DVD compliant mpegs, you will have to re-encode if you want them to play in a standalone player. And yes, this will reduce quality. If you choose a format that has the potential for better quality than your source material (DVD perhaps), the quality loss will be minimal. If you go to VCD, and have super quality source material, the quality loss wil be quite noticeable. Its up to you.
