  4. Is the disc scratched in any way? What do you use to rip? DVDDecrypter tells you if it encounters read errors. Do you get any software error?

  5. I have one too, I think its a poor DVD reader. Little minor problems with a DVD can cause the DRU500A to croak and die. I've got DVDs that the DRU500A cant read, but that other computers I have access to can read fine, along with standalone DVD players.

Im going to buy one of those cheap Lite-on DVD drives, and keep the sony for burning, which it does a great job at. Besides 2x read gets real old real fast... or real slow....

If you have the same problems I did, it generates hardware read errors.

I also own a Sony DRU500A, but I never use it for ripping. I use my Liteon 16x for ripping. I have found the hard way that DVDDecryptor tends to tank if it encounters read errors that require a retry. Once read errors show in the log for DVDDecryptor, you need to kill DVDDecryptor. Remove the DVD from the drive, carefully clean off any smears or smudges or fingerprints, and then start again from the beginning.

I have seen DVDDecryptor hang up, pretending to read but in reality doing nothing. Kill the program, clean the disk, start over.
