  1. I've tried Dr. Divx, but the audio is always a few milliseconds out of sink.

I think his answer was a joke. (Sink, dishwasher....get it?)

Anyway, you could try one of these guides.

Try the tools section on the left panel. DVDx is a free one.
There's not much to do but then I can't do much anyway.

EasyDivX was my first try, and I was pretty amazed at succeding without having a clue.
But honestly - "a few milliseconds out" is pretty good, considering what is done in the transition between DVD and DivX!

DVDx is very good and freeware.

I used shareware app called Max DVD to AVI converter that really simplified things for me when I started out. Its availble at download.com with a high user rating and is a popular download.

Once you've really got the hang of things you should try Gordian Knot...extensive guide at doom9.org

  8. FlaskMPEG, TMPGEnc and VirtualDubMod can also be used to output avi's with your chosen codec from a MPEG2 source.

(That is each of them can do it by themselves, not in some strange combination!!)

    cheers,

  9. Go to www.doom9.org, then hit the 'download' section and look for Gordion Knot towards the top of the list. It's a great pack of tools (with a nice looking front end included) that will automate the encoding step of the DVD-to-Divx process. The compression check feature is handy too, as it will give you a rough idea of what kind of quality your final product will have. I do want to stress you should take the time to read Doom 9's setup guides for Gordion Knot, as the program itself may look daunting at first to a new user.

  10. Have you tried Intervideo DVD Copy? There's a trial version at the site that works for a week. Rip the DVD to the HD with DVD Decrypter, point to the disk image as the source, put a CD-R into your writer, click the "DivX" button - out pops a DivX copy of the movie.
