  2. I do not have a DVD burner, but I can shed some light on what you are experiencing. Most regular production DVDs are DUAL layer (9.4 GB) and a DVD R is SINGLE layer (4.7 GB). Basically, that means that a DVD R cannot hold the same amount of data as a production DUAL layer DVD.

The best solution I can reccomend, would be to actually re-encode your RIPPED vob files into a DVD standard mpeg of whatever movie you are backing up. Then use your DVD authoring software to create your DVD R with this new MPEG file.

It has been said that a 4.7GB DVD R will fit a 2 hour movie, but not much else. If the movie is extra long or there are supplemental features you want, you may have to use two DVD Rs.

I hope this helps a little.

  3. There's a little utility called ReMPEG which does a great job of re encoding at lower bitrates without much loss of quality. You can find it over at http://www.doom9.org.

You would have to rip just the movie VOBs to your hard disk, use ReMPEG to lower the bitrate and then use VOB2MPEG or something similar to output standard MPEG2 files. Import these into your DVD Authoring software and recreate the menus and chapters.

If you just try to split the files over two discs it wont work. As well as the VOB files each DVD contains a number of other files which tell te player how to navigate the disc. If you split the files the player doesn't know how to navigate round the disc and most players will spit out the disc and refuse to play. This is why you will need to recreate all the menus etc.

  4. UPDATE.

Actually, ReMPEG will also seperate the audio and video files from a VOB for you apperently. I'm off to try it out as I haven't tried all the options yet

  6. If you go to the downloads section and click on Full Listing on the Encoders section you'll find it there. It's freeware too and is pretty good but it wont deal with odd resolutions. For example, it doesn't support Half D1 of 352x480 (or 352x576 for PAL). It will only accept standard resolutions of 352x240 (280 for PAL) or 704x480 (576 for PAL) AND 720X480 (or 576 for PAL)

    But here's a link anyway:
