I'll admit I'm not the expert when it comes to converting .avi to another format, but I do know that .avi is a very touchy thing to convert. There's so many ways to create an .avi that are not necassarily "norm". Try the guides on this site on "how to...". If you're still having trouble you might be out of luck.
One thing that that will help someone who might have an answer is to give more info about what kind of error messages you're getting. Is it ALWAYS unknown format with all the programs? Is it a "regular" .avi or DiVX.avi? -
Let's assume it's a DivX. What errors do you get when you try to open them in TMPGenc?
Have you tried frameserving the DivX/avi?

Maybe you have a type 1 avi, which TMPGEnc doesn't like. You can convert it to type 2 with pure motion dv TypeConv, which is free.

Thanks for such a Fast Response!
I really don't know what to do! Tpmeg says they are invalid format?? But I tried a program from this site called avi2mpeg??? When I try to encode it says the audio is compressed?? so I used the program to decompress, and then when I try to encode it works....but I started today at 10:00am and it's only done about 15,000 frames out of 97,000???? I'll try the other encoder mentioned, If anyone is willing to try and encode it for me give me your email? Thanks again!! -
hello
If you right click on the avi file and select properties it may just tell you what type of codec it is wrapping......
Another way is to use graphedit and open the avi using the "Render" command... in the graph you will see all of the steps windows uses to play the file (including the codec used)
Good luck

Open it in VirtualDub, go to file menu, avi information (or something like that), and itll tell you what the audio and video are encoded as.

ADJUST THE AVI PLUGINS IN TMPEG OPTIONS,RAISE THE PRIORITY ON THE DIRECT SHOW AND THE AVIVWF,THIS SHOULD DO THE TRICK.
