I have a video clip that avicodec tells me is divxv5. I can play it with my divx player but i want to convert to mpeg to put on vcd. I normally use tmpgenc and it works great on anything xvid, ac3 sound everything. I have tried changing the fourcc but tmpgenc wont recognize it. Have read that there is no seperate codec for it. Am really stuck, and have looked on the forums. Can anybody help me please, any ideas are welcome.

Of course you can. This is exactly what TMPGEnc is for. All you need is the DivX codec installed on your computer to be able to read the DivX AVI and away you go. If you already know how to do it with XviD then you're set. The procedure is exactly the same once you've got the DivX codec installed.

Hi macleod, thank you for the suggestion. I have tried dvd2svcd before. Doesn't it create .bin and .cue files. Had all kinds of problems writing to disc and when i managed it my dvd player wouldn't play it. Found that tmpgenc old version 2.57 worked everytime. So stuck with that. I know how to convert them now, not a problem. But this has really stumped me, its just the problem with the codec really. Can't get one that works. Any other suggestions, if not thank you anyway.

All I was talking about was the free DivX codec which is available for download from www.divx.com which you install on your computer and then you are able to do whatever editing of that DivX AVI that you want to do.
Sorry for the confusion I must have caused. -
Go to http://download.com.com/3000-2194-10062728.html? and download the DivX bundle and install it. This should solve your problem. Don't use the Pro version as it contains spyware.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I have the new divX bundle that comes with the divxplayer(not pro just normal). But that is the only thing that plays the avi. Avicodec says it is unsupported, every other player says class not registered. I think that tmpgenc uses codecs that are installed as single codecs. As i can do divx 3,4 Xvid etc because they are standalone codecs that work with any player cos they are in your sytem. divx 5 seems to only come in the player format so i cant get any other players to play it or any software to recognize it. Please continue to suggest things. Anybody got any divx5 avis that they can play on active movie or windows media player? ps it is taken a while for me to reply cos having explorer browser problems aaargh!!!

Actually, I have to disagree DRP...I'm having the same problem as TheBigK and my Windows XP Pro is running very stable (knock on wood)...THerefor I think the problem we are having might not have anything to do with the stability of our Windows installations....
I can play all my files in the divx player that comes with the divx codec, but all converting software that I try and use just can't seem to see the divx 5.0.3 files properly...
This is getting very frustrating to say the least.... -
Okay, maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but the BigK has admitted he has Explorer problems and that he has DivX 3, 4 & 5 all installed simultaneously along with the DivX Player as well!!
To make things even worse, he's probably using Windows XP as well.
While I have no doubt that some people could make this combination work perfectly, it sounds somewhat less than ideal to me. First of all, XP probably doesn't exactly go out of it's way to make things easy for DivX simply because it isn't a MicroSoft product and therefore isn't natively supported. My experience with XP is that if you've haven't given an arm & a leg and possibly your first born child to MicroSoft as well, then it will make your life as difficult as it possibly can.
Secondly, the DivX Player is unnecessary and only complicates things - better to leave it out altogether and just use WMP 6.4 or whatever other third party player is your favourite.
Thirdly, there is no need to have DivX 4 installed at all. DivX 5 will decode all DivX 4 content, so this is just doubling up and it's never a good idea to have more codecs installed than you absolutely need. AFAIC codec "packs" are the worst thing you can ever do to a computer - harder to get rid of again than a virus or worm.
You *might* need DivX 3 installed at the same time as DivX 5, but personally, I don't have DivX 3 installed here and I haven't found a single DivX file I can't play yet and I'm using DivX Pro v5.1 bundled with Dr. DivX v1.02p -

Well DRP i dont have xp i have windows ME. I only have the divx4 codec still installed because the divx5 codec is not working and my explorer problems are browser problems, i have a DNS error which NT(Hel)L now tells me are their fault. I will try to reinstall without the player, didn't spot that option so thank you for that.

Just to add still doesn't work when i just install codec and not player. Then i removed divx3 and 4, still doesn't work. Reinstalled new divx player and that plays it nothing else does still. Went into control panel>sounds>video codecs. It say divx 4.12 when i click properties it is the divx5 codec!!! Still really stuck. Help!!!

if you're getting a message saying "class unregistered or unsupported" then are you sure you've got the whole film?
-
Yes Dave cause i can watch it with the divx player, but cant watch it with wm player or active movie player.

You have windows me?
you have 2 choices.. either throw your computer out the window or install an nt varient.
Seriously, ME sux major donkey juevos when it comes to dll registration.
try start->run->cmd
change to ur system32 directory
or system directory.. I hate win9x and me.. but it's one of them
and type
RegSvr32 NameOfDLLFile.dll
or maybe its regsvr for windows 9x/me
if you get an error about it already running try doing a
RegSvr32 /u whateverdivx5.dll
and then RegSvr32 /u whateverdivx4.dll
then re register the divx5 with RegSvr32 whateverdivx5.dll
I dunno.. I'm just trying to help and things just keep popping into my head.
O yeah.. one more thing.. if none of this works uninstall divx 4 and 5, reboot, reinstall 5 and copy divx.dll and divx.ax to ur tmpgenc directory
cause activeX sucks like that!
