  1. What's the best and quickest way to change a PAL VCD to a NSTC VCD and have it come out all in sync and looking right?

havent tried this yet myself, but i think it would work fine.

Drop the PAL MPEG file onto Toast 6 in NTSC VCD mode. It should convert it just fine for you, although it is somewhat of a lengthy process.

    LMK if this works.

  3. That was my first guess too...but its a no go. It keeps the PAL format.

Is there a particular reason you want to do this? Playback issues?

Most VCD/SVCD compliant dvd players offer PAL/NTSC switching. You woudl just put it to Pal or best yet MULTI mode (which covers both!)

I also noticed that PAL play with NO problems in my NTSC player even though its set to NTSC and not PAL.

Just wondering, because often times its not really needed (with VCD/SVCD's)

I agree with Galactica 100%. However, there is a way to do this, but it is a very lengthy process. The quality loss is minimal.

You can use Cleaner 5 to do this also, but it is VERY time consuming.

  6. Well my dvd player recognizes its pal, and it switches modes..but the video becomes all garbled up and is displayed in black and white, plus the picture size is all messed up.. So maybe it is some kinda setting I have wrong or my TV. The same vcd plays fine on my mac, so it isnt the VCD. I guess i'll fool around with it and see if its just some wrong setting on the dvd player or something

Might sound wierd, but pop it though the options for NTSC / PAL / MULTI

i find that PAL disks play fine in NTSC mode and MULTI but odly enough NOT! in PAL

could be that, could not be that

    in the terminal type:

mencoder -ovc lavc -oac pcm /path/to/input.mpg -o /path/to/output.avi

    wait awhile.

open resulting .avi file in either toast 5 and drag to toast in vcd mode or in quicktime and export it to toast VCD.
    make sure settings say NTSC.

    Wait awhile.

    Ta-da!

ALL commercially produced Video CD (VCD)'s play on ANY DVD player or computer without regard to the standard or region. I have PAL VCD's made in other countries and have played in all 5 standalone NTSC DVD players for the past 3 and 1/2 years here in the US. NO problem. However, VCD's I created with Pinnacle software (NTSC) would not play in some (NTSC) DVD players.

It could be multiple problems. Though it is a VCD, it is recorded on CD-R discs. The DVD player did not play CD-R's. Other problem may have been the file formatting used by Pinnacle to produce the VCD may not have been recognized by my DVD player. It played fine in the computer and some other DVD players.

Now, DVD's are a different story altogether. Check to see if VCD was created on CD-R or CD-RW where your DVD player would not play those.

(Well, I buy my electronics from Costco and all I had to do was to return my DVD player after 2 years of use and purchase a new DVD from THEM for the service they render).
